15 Fun Superstitions That Make No Sense (But Better Not Doubt)

Superstition is something we truly believe in, but it has no rationale. After all, what is the scientific reason for warts to appear on your finger after pointing at stars? Little myths like this are passed down orally between generations and are part of our culture. In other words: Brazilians who were born in opposite regions of the country, probably learned the same beliefs — with a variation here, another there… and that is our wealth.

Next, the awesome.club gathered 15 superstitions in which Brazilians believe, but which make no sense. Anyway, it’s best not to doubt it (why… isn’t it?).

15. Don’t even think about sweeping someone’s foot

If you intend to go up to the altar someday, then be very careful when sweeping the house. After all, superstition says you can’t let your foot sweep or you won’t get married.

14. Did you make a face? Watch out for the wind!

It’s okay to make faces only indoors… and well closed! That way, you don’t run the risk of a little wind hitting and you having to keep your face forever. Have you thought? 🇧🇷

13. If the ear turned red, maybe it’s time to review your friendships…

Has your ear ever turned red and burning out of nowhere? Well… maybe it’s time to review your friendships. After all, conventional wisdom says that this is a strong sign that they are talking badly about you.

12. The itch that makes Brazilians even happier

11. Did the mirror break? Vish…

It’s best to ensure that your home’s mirrors remain intact. Nobody deserves to have seven years of bad luck just because they let the object break.

10. Who has never heard a “knock on wood”?

Anyone who has said or heard something that he does not want to become true needs to go (running) and knock on wood to expel the bad omen. And it has to be three times, see?

9. Jumping the seven ripples is legal

This superstition is classic for Brazilians who spend New Year’s Eve on the coast. The ritual promises to drive away negative energies and give extra strength for the year that has just arrived.

8. The last cookie is sacred

Popular belief says that you will lose your better half to whoever takes the last cookie in the bag. In other words, keep your eyes open!

7. The secret to success is in the way you cut the cake

Want life to get better? So write down the recipe: on your next birthday or on your wedding day, don’t forget that the cake needs to be cut from the bottom up, which is to “go up in life”.

6. For your mother’s sake, don’t leave the flip-flops

You’ve probably heard that leaving your flip-flops with the sole up can be tragic for your mother. Of course, the belief has no scientific basis, but we believe it must have been invented—probably—by a mother in despair over her children’s disorder.

5. It’s better not to aim for the stars

4. To start the day right

To have a good day, superstitious Brazilians like to get out of bed on the right foot. Whenever you’re in a scenario where luck is needed, get into the place on the right foot. Thus, good energies are guaranteed.

3. Every 29th, prepare a good gnocchi

Legend has it that the entire 29th is Gnocchi Day of Fortune or Luck. To participate in the ritual and attract a good bank account, put money under your plate, eat seven pieces of gnocchi standing up, and place an order for each of them.

2. It might not be a good idea to pull out the first white wire

According to those who believe in superstition, pulling out a strand of white hair makes two grow in its place. That is, those who have white hair must not have followed this “rule” there.

1. If money is missing, check if you have left any bags on the floor

Here’s another belief that it’s best not to doubt: if you leave the bag on the floor, the money will go away. If the money is short, it doesn’t hurt to check that your bags are well kept.
