14 Female Stereotypes Debunked by Science, But Many People Still Believe

Currently, there are many stereotypes and myths about women. However, scientists conducted various experiments and studies and found that popular beliefs about this half of humanity often do not correspond to reality.

O awesome.club, based on various studies and statistics, decided to debunk 14 myths about women. We understand that these issues often give rise to discussions about sexism, so we warn you in advance that we do not want to offend anyone, but simply describe curious facts based on studies.

Myth 1. Women like children by default

It is believed that due to maternal instinct, women are more inclined to love children, regardless of whether they are theirs or someone else’s. However, several years ago, at the Center for Advanced Studies in Behavioral Sciences, in Palo Alto, it was decided to verify the number of complaints about the behavior of children, according to customers of a fast food restaurant. As a result, for every nine women who complained about the crying and noise of the little ones, there was only one man who expressed his dissatisfaction with the problem. However, this can be explained by the fact that girls generally focus more on children and pay more attention to their behavior.

Furthermore, Professor Ross Park, from the United States, found that fathers, more than mothers, talk to their newborn children. And yet, men understand very well exactly what a child’s crying indicates: fatigue, hunger, lack of attention, etc.

Myth 2. Women are less intelligent

Scientists believe that women are in the middle, that is, among them it is rarer to find a very high or very low IQ. A few years ago, the University of Chicago published a study based on tests carried out among male and female American university students. On average, they showed less dispersion of estimates, while they dominated at both the top and bottom. That is, almost all the people we can call smarter or dumber are men. As a result, the average IQ was higher for females.

Myth 3. Women tolerate less physical pain

According to physiologists at the University of Siena, women are more patient, although men are better able to withstand pain with a natural painkiller: the male hormone testosterone. Girls have lower levels but tolerate painful experiences better. By the way, precisely because of the high concentration of testosterone in the blood of men, their immunity is generally lower. There is even a concept called “Male flu”. Also, guys are 10 times more likely to lose consciousness when they see blood. This is explained by the fact that they see it regularly and do not take it as something out of the ordinary.

Myth 4. Women work worse than men

The opinion still exists in part of society that a man is considered a better employee and therefore should be better paid. In a Yale University study, scientists demonstrated the existence of a gender bias in hiring. Identical resumes were sent to various universities across the US, only some had a female name and others a male. The results showed that male applicants more often received more attractive job offers and salaries.

Indeed, women have long shown that they are equal to men when it comes to performance in most professions. Interestingly, the former general director of IKEA Russia, when evaluating his business experience in the country, pointed out that women are more hardworking, learn much faster and better understand the essence of tasks.

Myth 5. Women are fearful

According to research by the German scientist Fritz Riemann, author of a work on the phenomenon of fear, women are less likely to recognize risk situations and find it easier to take bold actions without thinking. At the same time, they are less willing to overcome their fears, if only they could finally realize them.

Myth 6. Women love all kinds of accessories like jewelry and glitter

This is the logic of the mirror. If a person, when going on a date, puts on a dress with ruffles, is it because he likes it? It seems the answer is yes. But if a fisherman is trying to attract fish with the help of a worm, does that mean he likes to eat worms? It can be concluded that all these trinkets, barrettes and socks are mostly liked by men. See what the vast majority of women wear at home: comfortable pajamas, cozy clothes or regular shirts and shorts.

Myth 7: There are more women in the world than men

On average, for every 107 men in the world, 100 women are born. And that’s not counting countries like India or China, where this imbalance increases artificially. Scientists say that the relative global peace over the past 50 years has led to the fact that the shortage of women is now almost everywhere. And even in countries where the proportion of girls in the population is higher, such demographics are only due to an early male mortality rate.

Statistics confirm scientists. For example, data from the Federal State Statistical Service of Russia state that in cities there are 974 women for every 1,000 men under 29 years of age. At the same time, the proportion of these is aligned around 35 years.

Myth 8. Women are the weaker sex and less adapted to life

It is believed that men are more likely to actively express aggression than women, but scientists have found that this is not the case. In addition, they adapt better to life and withstand all kinds of problems. Scientists believe that all this is due to the characteristics of DNA. Women, happy owners of the XX chromosome, acquire resistance to many genetic diseases, such as muscular dystrophy and hemophilia. And although the average muscle mass of a woman is 24% less than that of a man, many of them resist better to critical situations, such as prolonged fasting, thirst or sudden changes in temperature. In addition, they resist infections much better.

Myth 9. Women live longer

In fact, things are different. It is not women who live longer, but men who, unfortunately, die earlier. Men ages 36 to 50 are more prone to the risks associated with impaired cardiovascular function. At the same time, their female counterparts are protected by the hormone estrogen, which preserves blood vessels. But after the age of 50, the possibilities for men and women to live a long life are practically the same.

Myth 10. Women like sweet things more and men love meat

It is believed that men need animal protein, and women prefer something lighter and sweeter. But in fact, guys usually do not need this type of protein, and it is quite possible to replace it with vegetables. On the other hand, women need to eat meat to maintain the normal functioning of the reproductive system and reduce the risk of bearing children with diseases. Nowadays, nutritionists prescribe complexes of vitamins and minerals so that girls who follow vegetarian diets do less harm to their future offspring.

Myth 11. Women idealized monogamous marriage

Indeed, monogamous marriage is a patriarchal rule that protects most men’s right to reproduce. Otherwise, several women could easily choose one of the most successful, strong and influential representatives of the opposite sex, and the rest would be left with nothing. And with the patriarchal structure of society, women are forced to choose average partners in terms of evolution and nature to have children.

Myth 12. Polygamy is a pleasure for men

Polygamy mainly takes into account the interests of women: practically any of them can count on a strong man, who guarantees her and her children protection, shelter and food. Weak, polygamous males are excluded from the evolutionary race. And while sheikhs have fun in harems, many guys don’t get any mates.

Myth 13. Women are cleaner

Scientists managed to refute even this seemingly obvious statement. An American biologist, Charles Gerba, examined the desks, telephones, computers, keyboards, crates and purses of some employees and concluded that women accumulate 4 times more bacteria in these places than men. Scientists attribute this to the fact that they often use different cosmetics, which, oddly enough, creates a favorable environment for microorganisms.

Myth 14. Women are more afraid of snakes and spiders

Arachnophobia is suffered 3 times more by men than by women. Snakes in hair or around the neck became the distinctive symbol of matriarchs, witches and priestesses of all types of cults. And that’s because these animals are very sensitive to smells and have easier contact with women than with men. Male odor often causes aggression. And if you look at the statistics of snake attacks on people, it turns out that only one woman out of 10 men is bitten.
