13 Characteristics of Modern Apartments That the Older Generation Might Not Understand

While many younger people prefer to rent property over buying it, there are still exceptions. Many, for example, inherit houses or apartments from their parents or grandparents. Even in these cases, however, it is unlikely that the inheritance will not receive a good makeover and gain a more “rejuvenated” face.

O awesome.club analyzed photos of homes of young Internet users, their stories and the notes of interior designers, and came to the conclusion that the opinions of different generations about home comfort are very different.

Kitchen integrated into the living room

Big family feasts or dinners with friends where someone “worked hard” in the kitchen are a thing of the past. Today’s young people prefer quick snacks, ready meals and delivery services. That’s why, in planned apartments, the kitchen is usually integrated into the living room — the concept of American cuisine is very popular among people in this age group. The era of cupboards full of dishes is also over. All you need is a couple of favorite plates, mugs for each member of the family and a set of cooler plates in case the family has guests. The same goes for tablecloths, sideboards and cloth napkins. No big kits. The less the better.

Maximum space saving

Representatives of the new generation are increasingly living in small apartments, and often they simply do not have a place to cram as much furniture as their parents would have done. They do, however, value personal space.🇧🇷 If they still live with their family, they can adopt unusual solutions to guarantee this “little corner”, for example, creating a cozy “nest”, as in the photo above. And why not?

Not afraid of dark tones and unusual colors

Young people are not usually conservative with their choice of colors. They are not afraid even of dark tones, which “steal” a little visual space, but, on the other hand, make the room cozy. And even those who opt for lighter shades they do it with style, thinking about comfort, not pleasing other people.

“Microclimate” is not just a word

Young people are aware of health and accompany technological progress. Air handling units, purifiers and humidifiers… all of these can be found far more often in your apartments than in those of your parents and grandparents. There are even those who invest in carbon monoxide detectors, which help monitor security.

“No” to uncomfortable furniture

Excessively fancy but uncomfortable sofas are a missing item in new generation homes. If you find one of these in the home of a “zoomer” (representative of the so-called “generation Z”), it’s probably because he hasn’t had time to change it yet. Today, young people choose to use the practical sofas with a minimalist design, folding and with removable covers. Also, instead of a standard armchair, they use puffs.

conscious consumption

Privacy and sound insulation

Born in an era marked by information overload, Zoomers value privacy. “Enjoying” the light of infinite banners and car headlights is seen naturally, but only from the front door. Home, on the other hand, should be a kind of fortress that protects from all of that. Windows with high quality double glazing, soundproofing and curtains blackout — these are the true friends of urban youth.

less television

For baby boomers and representatives of generation X, the TV is still the central object in the room, where the whole family can gather. For younger people, however, television has given way to computers and electronic gadgets. Even those who have it use it as a video game screen, and, less often, to watch streaming services like Netflix. In the end, it’s very easier to sit on a couch with a tablet🇧🇷 Not to mention the fact that when renting an apartment, the TV is more of a disadvantage than a plus, especially if it is bulky and there is nowhere to store it. In addition to the difficulty of transporting the device in a move.

experiments

It is impossible to predict what will be the trends in architecture and decoration in a year or two. Young people today rarely adhere to conservative standards and are not afraid to experiment when equipping the environment🇧🇷 Often, original and bold ideas become a new trend. For example, the closet pictured on the left has become so popular that it can practically be considered a mainstream style.

Sockets

Another distinctive feature of a young man’s apartment is the large number of chargers that, in turn, require an equally enormous number of outlets🇧🇷 While a charger is enough for older people to recharge their good old cell phone every two or three days, zoomers have a multitude of devices, which, of course, demands a good “stock” of chargers. They are smartphones, watches, headphones, fitness bracelets, external batteries… these young people often prefer outlets with built-in USB points.

home gardens

The older generation is used to growing seedlings or aromatic plants the old-fashioned way, in pots on the windowsill or in corners that receive a little sun — in the case of smaller apartments. Sometimes, these small vegetable gardens attract the attention of passers-by on the street who look at apartment windows. Concerned about the Environment, Zoomers also enjoy growing fresh herbs. But for that, they have modern devices, for example, to ensure a good supply of light.

Liquid soap

People between 18 and 24 years old prefer to use liquid soap🇧🇷 They believe that microbes remain in bar soap after use, but this has not been confirmed by science. On the other hand, among the older generation, the bar soap is usually preferred.
