13 Behind-the-scenes facts from “Barrados no Baile” that most viewers don’t know

Many series can be reprized, but few manage to go that far in a generation and, even as the years pass, they are not forgotten. One of those memorable series is Barrados no Baile, which lasted throughout the 1990s and remains in the hearts of many fans. The younger generation also got a taste of what it’s like to live in Beverly Hills when a spin-off of the series launched in 2008.

When Darren Star, creator of this famous series, was told to make a television series about teenagers from Beverly Hills, he thought of a proposal that was very real, with situations that young people could go through at that age and viewers could relate to. As inspiration, he had the films of John Hughes, who in the 80s directed several projects presenting young people with problems and experiences characteristic of this phase. One of his most famous films is Clube dos Cinco.

Shannen Doherty really believed he wouldn’t get the part. She stated, “My audition was horrible. I remember walking out of there and saying, ‘I lost this job, I blew it.’ The casting director came up and winked at me, saying, ‘I wouldn’t say that, little one’.” However, apparently it was all in her head as she landed the role of Brenda Walsh.

This test allowed him to work on Barrados no Baile for three seasons. In 1994, she left the series but continued to work in various productions, and in 1998, she starred in another popular series called Young Witches.

Dylan Mckay’s role was written to be a recurring character, nothing more. However, one of the producers, Aaron Spelling, was so delighted with Luke Perry’s performance that he decided to include him in the regular cast. The actor stated, “I was a guest star, and Aaron wanted to become a regular. With other producers you get hired, with Aaron you get cast.”

The actor worked on the series until the 6th season and returned for the 9th. So, he participated in several projects and the last one he acted in was Riverdale. Sadly, Luke passed away in 2019 at the age of 52. He was fondly remembered by many actors on the series, including Shannen Doherty, who said, “Luke was intelligent, reserved, humble, a complex man with a heart of gold, full of integrity and love.”

There was a rumor about Tori Spelling auditioning. It is said that she had auditioned under another name and no one in the cast knew she was the daughter of one of the producers. Tori admitted, “I heard my agent talk about the show. She told me that my father would produce it. When I got home, I saw his portfolio and I was like, ‘Wow, that’s cool!’ I wanted to play Andrea and went to audition under another name, but I ended up with the character Donna… and I’m sure my dad had something to do with that.”

Before Gabrielle Carteris became pregnant in real life — the actress was 29 when the series started — she went to talk to producer Aaron Spelling to convince him to incorporate this plot into his character. She commented: “I went to see Aaron and said, ‘My husband and I want to start a family, and I’d like you to write that Andrea is pregnant as I don’t want to hide my pregnancy. I want my son to know how proud I am to have him and share him with the world.’”

She mentioned that the producer looked at her in amazement, but accepted. So Andrea’s character played a very real pregnancy indeed.

The set location for the school was a few miles from Beverly Hills, but that’s where they were able to shoot. In fact, this college has been used in other film projects such as the films Buffy the Vampire Slayer, She’s All That, and the parody Not An American Bullshit Anymore.

Producer Aaron Spelling didn’t like actors to change their hair. If someone showed up with a different cut, he would go crazy. He also didn’t want the characters to wear sunglasses. According to his daughter, Tori, he had a saying: “Let the audience see first in your eyes what they will hear with your words.” For many seasons, the styles remained unchanged.

The winner of two Oscars participated in Barrados no Baile. She had a two-year contract in Season 8, but was fired after 13 episodes of the first year. The actress mentioned in an interview that she felt very bad, however, after taking part in the film that won her her first Oscar. In the end, everything turned out better for her.

Not everything in the series was flowers. The cast had certain internal conflicts. Behind the scenes, they weren’t close friends, nor was there that bond that many might expect after seeing them on screen. In fact, Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth used to argue a lot.

Jennie commented, “There were times when the show was worse than high school. There was a lot of unnecessary tension and drama on set, a lot of competition, and probably anger over the different salaries over the years. People found out how much each actor earned, got angry and wanted to receive the same amount.”

Tiffani Thiessen has joined the cast for Season 5. At the time, she and Brian were a couple. In her first episode, she kissed Luke Perry and talked about it: “It was really weird. Having your boyfriend act on the show and needing to kiss another man.”

One of the plots of the series that most kept the viewer tense in the armchair was the fact that best friends Brandon and Dylan try to conquer the same girl, Kelly. Actor Luke Perry, who played bad boy Dylan Mckay, preferred the Kelly character to stay with Brandon, as it was the smartest choice for her.

Luke said: “My character was a lot of things, but it wasn’t stable. If you want the best for her, if that’s what you really want, then you need to go ahead and let your best friend do it. That’s what my boy would do.”

Almost two decades after the beginning of Barrados no Baile, a spin-off called Barrados no Baile — Nova Geração was launched. The first few episodes were met with little success, many critics compared it to the original and felt something was missing. However, it gradually improved, as did its reception.

Many believe that seasons two and three were the best, and subsequent ones couldn’t match them. During the 5th season of the series, there was not a very good reception from the viewers and its rating dropped significantly. So they decided to cancel the show.

The new Barrados no Baile — Nova Geração featured special guests from the original Barrados no Baile. Many fans can watch the series to see their favorite characters from the past. Some of those who acted in the new production were Shannen Doherty, Tori Spelling, Jennie Garth, among others.
