12 Powerful Protection Herbs to Keep You Safe and Vigorous | Welcome to Wicca now

Hello my magical loves and welcome to Magic Magic! As with most people in our community, I have a deep love for the natural world and all things in it. I’m just learning more about healing herbs and plants. Because of this, I’m also learning about protective herbs. I wanted to share a handy little guide to all things plants and herbs related to protection.

If you are interested in the herbal kingdom, perhaps you are a budding green witch, then read these posts on herbs for love, herbs for self-love, a post on money herbs, and individual posts on lavender, cinnamon, and rosemary.

My favorite 12 magical herbs for protection

Below are the best plants and herbs for protection. Many of them make excellent protective barriers for the home and wards. Many of these herbs also work well in protective spells. Because many herbs are multifunctional, I’ve included other magical uses in this guide, along with some health benefits of each plant or herb.

A Word of Warning: Please remember to always exercise caution when using herbs and plants. Never consume anything you are not 100% sure about. I am not a doctor and do not claim to be! The medicinal uses of these money herbs should not be taken on the advice of a trained physician.

Herbs for Protection #1 Angelica

A botanical drawing of Angelica.

Angelica is an ancient medicinal herb that has been used for centuries. It was used by the Vikings and is one of the first medicinal plants to be exported from the Nordic countries to the rest of Europe. During the 17th and 18th centuries it was used to treat plague and intestinal infections. It increases the production of stomach acid, which can weaken or remove bacteria, leading to gastrointestinal distress. Angelica can also be used to stimulate appetite and reduce gas production.

Let the gas out, bottling doesn’t help anyone! But if you want to reduce your gas production, Angelica can help.

If you want to eat this plant, be careful. Although the stems are edible when bitter, the root is mildly poisonous when fresh. Make sure you choose the right type of Angelica. Some members of the same family, such as B. water hemlock, are more toxic and can be dangerous. Fun fact, Angelica is often used as a cake decoration, possibly due to its almost unreal looking and glossy leaves.

Grow Angelica in your garden to protect your home and keep away spirits that want to harm you. Carrying the root of the angelica plant in a small pouch for personal protection.

These are the leaves of the Angelica plant. I see these decorating cakes and at food shows all the time. Aren’t its shiny leaves pretty?

Herbs for Protection #2 Anise

Anise is not only a delicious spice for mulled wine and curry, but also a great protective herb.

This aromatic protective herb is perfect for warding off spirits that may not have the best of intentions. Put aniseed in a small bag and place under your pillow while you sleep to avoid nightmares. If you have a magic circle, you can use anise leaves inside the circle to prevent malevolent spirits from entering while communicating with the other side.

Anise can be used to treat coughs and colds. It supports digestion and can help with stomach problems when used as a tea. Anise is ideal for women because part of its chemical composition resembles estrogen. If you are breastfeeding, aniseed can help you produce milk.

Other Magical Uses: Purification (use in a bath if you need purification), joy, awareness, opens the third eye, connection with the divine

Star anise is so delicious when you make mulled wine out of it. A great addition to any Samhain festival.

Herbs for Protection #3 Ash

Ash is a great shelter plant, especially if you are on or near water. Keep a small piece of it with you and you will be protected from harm. If you want to ward off malicious spirits, hang a piece of ash in the door of your home.

If you feel that your whole house needs protection, you can use wood chips from an ash tree. To do this, take some small pieces of ash wood and scatter them around your house in the four elementary directions (north, east, south, west). Follow this example by placing a small talisman in each of the 4 directions for each element (earth, fire, water and air). Then think about how you want to create a protective net around your home. If you set your intention strongly enough, the ash will protect you from harm.

Ash is a great broom for cleansing rituals and is often used to heal wands.

Did you know that Cedric Diggory’s wand was Ashwood in Harry? Potter?

Other Magical Uses: Put the leaves in a small pouch and wear it around your neck for good luck. If you want to have foreboding dreams, put some ash leaves under your pillow at night. Mythologically, Ashwood repels snakes and fairies. It is also associated with lighting.

Doesn’t the ash have a nice shape? I would like to have one in my garden.

Herbs to protect #4 cacti

Don’t you love the variety of shapes, sizes and spikes? If you’re looking for a low-maintenance shelter plant, these folks are the ones to turn to. You don’t have to water them much and they basically take care of themselves

Cacti are wonderful protective plants. If you need to protect your home (link to home protection here) this is a low maintenance option. Because they require so little attention, you can easily keep a pair around your home for protection. Plant one in each corner of your yard to create a general protective border. If you don’t have a garden, you can also keep a potted cactus in each corner of your living room for the same protection. They help keep burglars and unwanted visitors away

You can also collect the spikes and place them in a small glass vial or locket to form a protective amulet. Although you can use a cloth pouch for this, I wouldn’t recommend it as the sharp spikes could poke through the fabric.

Other Magical Uses: Chastity

How magical are these flowers? This is one of the easiest herbs to keep since they are so low maintenance and basically thrive on neglect.

Herbs for Protection #5 Fennel

This delicious vegetable is multifunctional. Not only is it delicious as a vegetable, but you can use the seeds, fronds, and flowers for cooking.

Fennel is a wonderful protective plant and can ward off ill-intentioned spirits. Hang it in windows and doors to protect your home. Grow it in your garden to provide general protection for your home. Planting fennel indoors is also said to bring good luck. Fennel also has some great healing properties. This protective herb is excellent for digestion. Make a fennel tea to help with colds and expel phlegm. If you have bad breath and want to improve it, chew some dried fennel seeds.

Other magical uses: cleaning, money

I love to oven roast fennel until tender and then drizzle with olive oil.

Herbs for Protection # 6 Fern

There are so many different types of ferns. Therefore, choose one that you like as they all offer excellent protection.

Ferns are a very strong protective plant. Because of this, they are an extremely useful plant to grow in your home. They protect you from negativity and keep malicious spirits at bay.

If you want to protect your house from burglars, you can scatter fern leaves on the window sills of every room in the house. You can also keep a small vase with a fern leaf on the windowsill if you are not so keen on having dried herbs on your windowsills.

Make a small pouch and fill it with fern leaves for a personal protection charm. This should also ward off unnatural diseases. If you are worried about your house being bewitched, you can add fern leaves to the water the next time you mop the floor. As a result, the curse should be removed.

Other Magical Uses: Fairy favorite, enhance the magical properties of other plants

Unfurling ferns have so much potential, don’t you think?

Herbs for Protection #7 Holly

I’m a fan of holly. I had one in my garden growing up and always loved the way they were both soft and pretty but extremely protective of themselves. Holly has very soft leaves when they are small and these become very prickly as they mature. Harvesting the berries can be dangerous business!

Another home protection plant, holly, deters both magical and non-magical invaders. Plant a few trees around your house to create a protective ring.

Other Magical Uses: If you want good luck, carry a sprig of holly in your pocket. Attracts love, increases manliness and masculinity. You can make a love potion with holly leaves. Put sheets under your bed to ensure a peaceful and restful sleep.

Aren’t they pretty? I love the contrast between spiky leaves and soft, smooth berries. Consequently, I think this plant is the perfect herb for love and protection.

Herbs for Protection #8 Juniper

Nobody needs negative thoughts or energies, Juniper can help keep them at bay.

Another very strong protective plant. Keeping juniper berries around your person will keep unkind thoughts and energies away from you. They also protect you from accidents and theft. Juniper also negates hexes and malevolent magic while driving away malevolent spirits. Did you know that juniper berries are the main flavor in gin? They’re also a great addition to a Gravlax marinade.

Other Magical Uses: Carrying the dried berries in a small pouch attracts a lover.

Occasionally we all need a stiff gin and tonic. Sometimes it’s the only thing that can dissipate those negative energy gies that have been plaguing you all day. Maybe it’s the juniper berries that work their magic.
