12 Antique, Classic Perfumes We Love, The Price Of Which Has Only Increased Over The Years

The perfume industry releases around 100 new fragrances annually, however, among the best-selling perfumes, most are classics. even the perfumes vintage, released many years ago, are still highly sought after and not just by collectors.

we from awesome.club we were curious to know which perfumes, in addition to the famous Chanel nº5, are valued even years after their launch and which remain in our memories to this day. With a list of the most known perfumes, we went to the forums that deal with the subject. In the bonus, we reveal whether it’s worth buying old versions of fragrances, as well as some classic perfumes worn by celebrities.

Why are fragrances “not the same” now?

When our mothers and grandmothers say that today’s perfumes don’t smell the same as before, they are right. Although packaged in identical bottles and bearing the same names, nowadays the composition of the perfume does not depend exclusively on the manufacturer, but can change due to the restriction of fragrances.

In 2003, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) created a list of ingredients that can no longer be used in perfume production, or whose quantity must be strictly limited. And the number of items on that list is constantly increasing. It includes not only natural substances such as jasmine absolute, bergamot oil or oak moss, but also synthetic substances. For this reason, many classic perfumes have their formulas adjusted nowadays.

“Jicky” – Guerlain

“Jicky” is one of the oldest perfumes to contain synthetic fragrance compounds in its formula. The perfume has been produced continuously since 1889, but its formula has changed over time. Bottles bearing the original formulation, launched in the 1920s, are offered at auctions for $1,500 or more.

In 1889, Guerlain launched “Jicky”, which was the first to include synthetic vanillin mixed with smoky aromatic phenols. This created a truly wonderful aroma and became one of Guerlain’s trademarks. “Jicky” is still available, although , like most perfumes of that time, its formula had to be changed. This is one of my favorites, although to many it smells old-fashioned. © acleverpseudonym / Reddit

A few years ago, I read in various books and magazines that “Jicky” was Jacqueline Kennedy’s favorite perfume. I am transported to another time and place when I wear this perfume. © Guerlducky10 / Reddit

“Red Moscow” (Krasnaia Moskva) – “New dawn” (Novaia Zaria)

There is a legend that “Red Moscow” is a replica of the Russian Empress’s favorite perfume and that it was invented in 1913. It is difficult to say whether this is true or not, but “Red Moscow” was launched in 1925. An elegant bottle decorated the women’s dressing tables in Russia for decades, and it was also well accepted abroad. The aroma became less saturated in the 1970s — due to the introduction of new standards. In the 1990s, the perfume became popularly known as “grandparents’ perfume”. And not long ago, a famous Moscow actress proclaimed it superior to many French fragrances, causing Russian women to take an interest in it again.

I once bet with my co-workers that I would wear this perfume for a week. How many “yucks” I’ve heard from everyone! We had to sign a contract with Spaniards and my job was to collect and bring the necessary documents. So when I went in for the second or third time they said, “Smell” and something else. The translator smiled, looked at the management, but was silent. At that time I was young and shy and didn’t need any extra attention, but at the end of the day the translator explained to me what was said: “Your perfume is amazing”. © Tatiana / Yandex.Dzen

This perfume is not for everyone and at first it will just stun you, however, if you hold on, no one will ever guess that you are not wearing Dior or Guerlain. “Red Moscow” is really a perfume for few, it doesn’t look good on all women. © Zvezda.Polyn / Yandex.Dzen

“Miss Dior” – Christian Dior

The first version of “Miss Dior” was released in 1947. The original perfume can still be found at auction. These bottles, even costing around 400 or 500 dollars, are a collector’s dream.

Unfortunately, the current “Miss Dior” and its original version of 30 years ago are very different. The old perfume is my love for the rest of my life, but now it’s impossible to acquire it. And I don’t want another one. © Olga Pavina / Yandex.Dzen

I’ve had a classic scent for 10 years or more. My husband gave it to me. I used half, got tired of the aroma and gave it to a friend. Now I regret a little of not having at least the empty bottle. © Olia / Yandex.Dzen

“Poison” — Christian Dior

“Poison” (“Poison” in French) got its name “toxic” due to the lines of the French poet Paul Valéry: “Perfume is a poison for the heart”. The perfume has a persistent aroma, which harmoniously combines honey, incense and tuberose. It is said that at the height of its popularity in some theaters and restaurants, posters appeared: “Women who wear ‘Poison’ cannot enter.”

“Poison” is one of my all-time favorites, but the scent is pretty strong and complex. Over the years, the fragrance has undergone some corrections, but even its current form is “not for the faint of heart”. © Amuhleen / Reddit

There really are no people indifferent to this aroma. At the University there was a colleague who was a fan of this perfume. She used little, but we suffered from her strong scent! It seems to me that no one is indifferent to “Poison”. People like him or hate him. I belong to the first group and I have a classic “Poison”, but for obvious reasons I rarely use it. I really like him. Maybe it’s a fragrance for women over 30, although I first wore it at 25. © Nina Vladi / Yandex.Dzen

“Trésor” — Lancome

The scent of this classic perfume, whose name means “treasure” in French, is reminiscent of a juicy peach. Although many fans associate it with autumn, it is believed that it harmonizes better with the heat. To conquer this perfume vintageat auctions it is necessary to pay attention not only to the round bottles of the original, but also to the triangular ones, of the version launched in the 90s.

When “Trésor” was released, it was considered incredibly beautiful. The perfume was conceived as a tribute to young mothers, so it had a milky, sweet and soft scent, with creamy notes of apricot and rose. There were no “edges”, but he wasn’t boring “rounded”, “linear”, but rather sweet and dreamy. © DarrenFromFinance / Reddit

“Anais Anaïs” — Cacharel

In 1963, Cacharel decided to launch its own fragrance. The perfume found its fans immediately. He smelled of lilies and hyacinths, jasmine and rose, orange blossoms and currant leaves. Also — patchouli and oak moss. Although the last ingredient is banned nowadays, the fragrance of the current “Anaïs Anaïs L’Original” is very close to the first version.

It was the summer of 1986 in Moscow. The store’s counter displayed little gray boxes with a word written in silver. They were wrapped in plastic wrap and you couldn’t see what the bottle looked like, but they were very eye-catching. “36 rubles” — the seller answered my question about the price. It was expensive, but my mom bought it. She kissed me and said, “Your birthday present!” — In a few days I would be 20 years old. This was my first French perfume. There were many after, but this is one of the most beloved ones to this day. © Gostia / Yandex.Dzen

I have a history with this perfume. A friend brought it from Moscow and I immediately fell in love with it. Then she got pregnant and couldn’t stand the scent anymore. I convinced her to sell me the perfume. How happy I was! I left the bottle on the dressing table and my one and a half year old son really liked the beautiful little box, until one day he took it and the bottle spilled all over his pants. So each time I washed them, I suffered from the memory of the lost perfume. © Tatiana Mikhailova / Yandex.Dzen

“Magie Noire” — Lancome

“Magie Noire” is a legendary perfume that brought the woody aroma of honey and bitter rose, but without the floral lightness. He did not condone frivolity, it was a lingering perfume that had to be used literally in drops. Initially, the bottle was a black “dress” with two stripes, but later the “dress” became just black.

My favorite perfume. I bought it in 1980 for 45 rubles (my salary was 70 rubles) and I still have it. I rarely use it. I once read an article and discovered that the version of the bottle I own with two orange stripes is extremely coveted by collectors. © Valentina Malysheva / Yandex.Dzen

My favorite perfume! I keep a bottle for 20 years and use the fragrance only on special occasions. Even after so long, the perfume hasn’t spoiled and hasn’t changed. I recently saw one of the same name in a store. The packaging was recognizable, but at first the scent had little in common with “Magie Noire” and only after a while on the skin did the fragrance open revealing that it was the same perfume. © Irina Poliakova / Yandex.Dzen

“Tet-a-Tet” — “New Dawn” (Novaia Zaria)

This perfume has long since become the hallmark of “New Dawn”. Fans of the fragrance have not reached a consensus: it is smooth and light, or serious and full-bodied. The producer described it in the brochure as “the aroma of sun-warmed grass and tree bark” and simultaneously “the smell of a forest stream”.

In my fragrance collection vintage there is a perfume “Tet-a-Tet”, purchased in 1987. It is perfectly preserved and the color of the liquid has not changed. The aroma is a little heavy and very similar to the famous “Magie Noire”, by Lancôme. I know this because it is also part of my collection. © Tata / Yandex.Dzen

“Climate” — Lancome

This perfume has been around for less than 20 years. In the early 1980s, its production ended, despite its commercial success. The brand did not say whether it was because of the ingredients that became unavailable, or for another reason. Several times they tried to re-release it, but each time it was updated, according to fans, the aroma couldn’t compete with the original version. And for collectors, the version in bottles with…
