The plot of Harry Potter has spanned more than a generation. There are not a few people around the world who grew up imagining themselves in the halls of Hogwarts and living magical adventures alongside their friends. Currently, the story follows its course, with other protagonists and set years before the events shown in the little wizard’s films. We are talking about the Fantastic Beasts saga, which is releasing its third part.
like us, from awesome.clubwe are big fans of the magical world, we decided to check out several similarities and curiosities that connect the sagas of these successful productions.
1. The struggle for coexistence between magicians and non-magicians is similar in both sagas
The coexistence between the magical world and the world of “muggles” (or non-magical), is a fundamental component in JK Rowling’s story, as is the acceptance of magical people towards non-magical relatives.
In this sense, the villains of both plots, Voldemort in Harry Potter and Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts, fight (using different methods) to ensure the supremacy of magicians over non-magicals.
2. Creatures play an important part in both stories
Magical creatures are an important and defining component of the magical world. From well-known symbols of mythology, such as the basilisk, the phoenix bird, centaurs and giants, to inventions such as thestrals and grindylows, the sagas prove to have a wide creative repertoire behind those so fascinating creatures.
3. There was reference to Grindelwald already before the Fantastic Beasts saga
Gellert Grindelwald revealed himself to be the main villain in the first part of the Fantastic Beasts saga. However, there was already reference to the same character in the movie that started it all: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. This is a deleted scene in which Ron told Harry that Dumbledore was known to have defeated a dark wizard in 1945.
The character, in turn, made a brief appearance in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1, being played by Jamie Campbell Bower in his younger version and by Michael Byrne in his current version.
4. Dumbledore’s story is complemented throughout both plots
The figure of Albus Dumbledore is one of the most important and relevant in the wizarding world. Wise and powerful in Harry Potter, in the Fantastic Beasts saga he begins to be shown in detail as to his personality, from data that were narrated in dropper in the penultimate Harry Potter film. Thus, the public gains a more complete picture of what is one of the most famous wizards in the Potterhead universe.
5. Magical institutions are important in one story as in the other
The different ministries linked to the wizarding world are of vital importance within the Potterhead universe. While in Harry Potter we can only see the British Ministry of Magic, in the first part of Fantastic Beasts we have the chance to meet MACUSA, responsible for governing and managing magic in the United States.
6. The Lestrange family plays an important role in both plots
The public heard the surname Lestrange for the first time in the fifth film of the Harry Potter saga, with the participation of the evil and perverse Bellatrix. And in the second feature of Fantastic Beasts, we are introduced to Leta, the legitimate bearer of the Lestrange surname (since Bellatrix adopted it by marriage) and engaged to the protagonist’s brother, Newt Scamander.
7. The Mirror of Erised appears again in Fantastic Beasts
The Mirror of Erised turned out to be one of the most interesting objects in the first Harry Potter film, showing whoever was being reflected in it whatever the person most desired. In the second Fantastic Beasts feature film, we can see the magic mirror again, this time showing Dumbledore’s great desire to be happy, without having to fight Grindelwald.
8. Nicolas Flamel and the philosopher’s stone appear in Fantastic Beasts after being mentioned in Harry Potter
The famous figure of alchemist Nicolas Flamel had already been mentioned in the first Harry Potter movie, when he is named creator and bearer of the philosopher’s stone, a magical object that has the ability to guarantee immortality. The character physically appears in the second Fantastic Beasts feature film as a circumstantial ally of Newt Scamander in his fight against the shadowy wizard Grindelwald.
9. Nagini, Voldemort’s snake, appears in her human form in Fantastic Beasts
Viewers of the Harry Potter films have come to know Nagini as the merciless snake who accompanied the villain, Lord Voldemort. And one of the most impressive discoveries caused by the Fantastic Beasts saga occurs in the second film, when we can see the creature in its human form. At the time, we learn that she had a whole story before she was captured and became the servant of the darkest wizard in the wizarding world.
10. Boggarts are present in both stories
Boggarts are introduced in the third Harry Potter film as creatures that physically represent people’s greatest fear. So, to be defeated, they need to be imagined in a ridiculous way. In the second Fantastic Beasts feature, such creatures appear briefly during a flashback to a Defense Against the Dark Arts class taught by none other than Albus Dumbledore.
11. Professor McGonagall appears briefly in the second Fantastic Beasts movie
Professor Minerva McGonagall, played by Maggie Smith, appears since the first Harry Potter film as one of the most important authorities in the saga, maintaining that position until the last feature film. In the second Fantastic Beasts film, she makes a brief appearance, this time played by Fiona Glascott.
If you lived in the wizarding world, what kind of wizard would you be? In your opinion, which Hogwarts house would represent you best?
