11 Details Hidden in Sansa Stark’s Dress in “Game of Thrones”

DB Weiss and David Beniof, creators of the HBO series game of Thrones, were known for having a careful eye when it came to hiding details of great significance in different scenes of the production. We can say that the meticulous costumes used on screen worked as a separate character in the plot, evolving along with the characters themselves, who wore these pieces of clothing and accessories. Nothing was left to be desired in the looks displayed by Daenerys Targaryen, Cersei Lannister or Jon Snow: behind every fabric and stitching, there was a story.

For example, the elaborate gown that Sansa Stark wore during her coronation as Queen in the North brought subtle occult details, underscoring the monarch’s lineage and her transformation as an individual, showcasing the meticulous work of the series’ production.

O awesome.club investigated in depth the symbology hidden in the last costume of Sansa Stark and wants to share with you a list of 11 of these secrets.

1. Crown named after Robb Stark

The silver crown worn by Sansa has two fierce wolves joined together, much like the brooch worn by her brother, Robb Stark, after he was named King in the North. However, unlike Robb, the wolves displayed by Sansa are howling upwards. In addition, the smaller one supports the larger one, symbolizing that the Stark brothers supported each other so that they could survive.

The new queen has honored the words spoken by her father, Ned Stark, when she was just an innocent girl: “In winter, the lone wolf dies, but the herd survives.”

2. Crown Back Details

Sansa spent years being tormented by then Queen Cersei, but we can also say that Stark learned a lot from Lannister about how to run a kingdom. Therefore, in honor of the teachings learned from Cersei during her stay in King’s Landing, Sansa’s crown reflects that period in the character’s life. The back of the tiara is shaped like an interlocking ring — the piece is similar to the one Cersei wore in previous seasons. However, the big difference is that Cersei’s crown last season ended with two ribbons coming together to form the lion of House Lannister. Sansa’s ended with the two wolves.

3. The hairstyle

Sansa Stark’s long red locks generated some discussion throughout the eight seasons, and the complex hairstyles worn by the character were much admired by fans. Sophie Turner, Sansa’s interpreter, said in an interview that the hair style was meticulously thought out, acquiring a different meaning in each season: “Sansa’s hair constantly reflects the people she learns from, who she imitates or who she is inspired by. When she was Cersei’s prisoner, Sansa absorbed her manipulation techniques, and it shows in her hairdo.”

Becoming Queen of the North, Sansa is under no one’s influence. Therefore, at the coronation she did not appear with braids or elaborate hairstyles, but with her own style.

4. Scales in honor of House Tully

The sleeves of Sansa’s dress were embroidered with fish scales, representing House Tully, from her mother’s family, Catelyn Stark (formerly Tully). Catelyn died during the Red Wedding along with her son Robb Stark, an event that marked Sansa forever.

5. Weirwood leaves (heart tree)

The intricate embroidery didn’t just appear on the sleeves. On the inside of the garment, the designers mixed weirwood (heart tree) leaves, as if they were falling to the ground. The tree only grew in the woods of the North, and it was at the foot of one of them that Ned Stark, Sansa’s father, spent a lot of time praying. In recent seasons, the young Stark family used the space to meditate and make plans.

The costume designer, Michele Clapton, revealed on her Instagram profile that the metal bodice represented the branches of the tree growing, serving as a kind of armor.

6. One-sided cover

7. Black Cloak in Honor of Jon Snow

The voluminous stole also serves as a tribute to Sansa’s brother, Jon Snow. During his stay in the Night’s Watch, he also wore a heavy black cloak much like the one worn by Sansa at her coronation.

8. Sansa’s own needle

In season one, Jon Snow hands Arya a small sword and tells her that she needs to name the object. Arya names the sword “Needle”, since Sansa had sewing needles. Now the little sister would have her own needle.

This attitude had great importance throughout the series. When Sansa’s life became more obscure, she began to wear a necklace with a kind of pin through it. Like her sister, Sansa named the gem “Needle,” as the object reflected her own innocence. As a child, Sansa loved to embroider, and her work was admired even by Queen Cersei.

Another detail: the costume designer revealed that her hands appear to be weaving the dress of the Queen of the North.

9. The wolf’s skin and gray color refer to his father, Ned Stark

The embroidery on the sleeves is not only in the form of fish scales, but the design of the piece was created to also represent the coat of a wolf. Thus, homage was paid to the Houses of both of Sansa’s parents: Tully and Stark. Additionally, the gray of the dress references Ned’s colors and his lineage.

10. The material of the piece was the same used for Queen Margaery Tyrell’s wedding dress

11. The complete look is reminiscent of the scenes where her brothers, Robb and Jon, were chosen kings

Two of the most iconic scenes in the entire series showed Robb Stark being proclaimed King in the North in the first season, as well as Jon Snow years later. In the scene where the northerners hail Sansa queen, the same soulful chant was sung as was repeated during the proclamation of her older brothers.

The costume designer’s full message on Instagram

“The piece, very dark, was made from the same fabric used in Margaery’s wedding dress with Joffrey… Sansa had a bond with her. The dress also has a pattern of falling leaves. There is a feathered and embroidered wolf over the shoulder that cannot be seen here, and beautiful red beaded leaves on one sleeve. The mangoes have a texture like fur in the first century. The metal bodice features heart tree branches. The crown is two howling wolves. Nothing was created by chance… In the final scenes, it’s my hands that appear wearing Sansa! Thanks to David and Dan for making this possible.”

Bonus: Details on Sansa’s armchair and Arya’s ship represent the wolf of House Stark

In the first few seasons, Sansa and Arya Stark are in search of their own identity. However, in the final scenes of the series, the sisters used the wolf as a representation of their origin. Details of Sansa’s throne and vessel show the iconic animal howling.
