11 Actors Who Decided to Take a Break from Their Careers

There is a certain point in many actors’ careers where they decide to take a break to focus on other things. Sometimes there are long periods that seem to last forever, but then they end. At other times, it really is the end of someone’s acting trajectory.

Cameron Diaz, known for her roles in The Panthers and Who Will Stay With Mary?among others, said in 2017 (after shooting the film annie) that she was tired of traveling to film and would take a break. In March 2018, the actress confirmed that she had permanently left acting in front of the camera. Since then, she has been living a quiet life with her husband, Benji Madden.

Some actors need time to analyze their relationship to their career. Rick Moranis, known for his roles in The ghost hunters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, among others, had taken a break from the industry. He argued that his role as a single father was more important than his job and that, once he had resigned from the acting world, he realized he didn’t miss it at all. While this appears to be the end, Moranis commented in 2015 that he had not completely abandoned film, but was now deciding which roles to play. Like Rick Moranis, Meg Ryan hasn’t completely stopped acting, but has become more selective with the roles she wants. In a meeting with Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays Pepper Potts in the Marvel movie universe, she admitted that acting was never her idea, but that she was curious and wanted to experiment with her relationship with other projects. Meg takes a career break for up to four years, saying she’s not interested in being famous and that she intends to have
a quiet life.

Cary Grant was a 20th century actor, known for being the lead in several films since the 1930s. He retired at the age of 62 to care for his daughter, Jennifer. Many directors wanted to bring him to the screen again, Alfred Hitchcock among them, but the actor had already become disillusioned with the cinema of the 1960s and wanted to concentrate on more important things in life. He died in 1986.
