10 Weird Traditions of the British Royal Family

Did you know that Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, New Zealand and Jamaica all have a queen? Yes, that’s right. Elizabeth II is Queen of the United Kingdom and fifteen other independent states known as Commonwealth Realms. She is the monarch who has been in power for the longest time. In addition, she likes to drive (even though she doesn’t have a driver’s license), has a personal ATM at home, and celebrates her birthday twice a year, once for her family and once for her kingdom.

But don’t think that the curiosities end there. O awesome.club found some little-known and rather strange rules relating to the British royal family. Check it out right now.

1. Prince Charles Tailors have pieces of fabric from suits that have been used for over 30 years

We are talking about the company Anderson & Sheppard, responsible for the suits of the heir to the throne, Prince Charles. It was he who ordered that the fabric samples be kept, for any possible change. Among the samples are pieces of a suit and trousers worn by Charles at Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle. The suit was made in 1984 and the prince has appeared in it on a few occasions.

He is very strict about this and doesn’t like to waste anything. Charles likes to always wear the same style and almost never buys clothes.

2. Elizabeth II has been wearing the same nail polish for nearly 30 years

3. When traveling, black clothes cannot be missing

In the royal family there is a rule: black clothing is only for mourning. Therefore, on a normal day you will not see monarchs in this color. However, every member of the royal family must always wear black clothes when they travel, in case of an emergency.

Princess Diana once broke that norm. In 1994, after their separation, she appeared in a little black dress with a classic cut. The dress was called the ‘revenge dress’.

4. Direct heirs cannot travel together

Members of the royal family cannot travel together, as is the case with any family. This is because of the fear of leaving the throne without a successor. Therefore, at least one of the heirs must travel separately. Even when Charles and his sons William and Harry have to go to the same place, they have to go on different planes.

5. No spices, yes mayonnaise

According to the words of the head of Buckingham Palace, the Queen does not live on large banquets. Unlike other members of the royal family, Elizabeth II loves simple food: zucchini, fish and a sandwich with mayonnaise. But what you probably wouldn’t find on the Queen’s table are starchy foods. The menu does not include potatoes, rice or pasta. Also, cooks cannot put spices in dishes.

6. The Queen has an official underwear supplier

This fact became known after the 2017 scandal, when the company Rigby & Peller lost the title of official supplier of underwear to the British royal family. June Kenton, founder of the company that for more than half a century made many clothes for the residents of Buckingham Palace, published a memoir where she told her personal trajectory and mentioned several stories related to monarchs. After that, the crown ended its relationship with the company. The supplier that took the place is still a mystery.

7. In 2025, the Queen will be evicted from the Palace

This will happen because of a renovation at Buckingham Palace. In reality, the works started since last year, but the Queen tries to delay the change as much as possible. By 2025 every room will be affected, also interfering with the lifestyle of the Queen, a 92-year-old woman, and her husband, 97 years old. When the quiet life is no longer possible, she will leave the palace, but of course temporarily.

8. Royal funerals are rehearsed in Great Britain

Of course the Queen knows this very well. The Council of Ministers describes what the monarch’s funeral will look like in detail. It is already known that 10 days of mourning will be declared, for example. Officials already have a plan to welcome 600 members of the Privy Council to formally approve who will be the heir to the throne. The Queen knows these rehearsals happen. Last year she completed 65 years of reign.

9. Umbrella in all styles

As everyone has heard, London is a rainy city, which means the Queen needs to have several umbrellas with her at all times to match her outfit. The sets look super cute.

10. To this day the queen rides a horse

Since childhood, the Queen has been riding a horse. She received her first when she was just four years old. After her father’s death, the queen inherited all the thoroughbred horses, and they were not few. Her horses have won races on over 1,600 occasions.
