10 seemingly normal behavior traits that reveal low self-esteem

1. Always occupy the seat in the last row

Not everyone likes to draw attention and there are people who even avoid doing so. Individuals with low self-esteem believe they don’t deserve to “show up”. During concerts, lectures and other public events, people with low self-confidence are very likely to occupy places in the back rows and are afraid to express their opinion about what is happening.

In general, people like that find it even unpleasant to express their own opinions. The need to defend a point of view during a discussion provokes deep terror, as interlocutors can destroy your fragile arguments. Hence arises the desire to avoid conflicts, discussions and even the revelation of bad and good impressions.

2. Buy lots of things (usually cheap)

Compulsive buying is one of the most frequent demonstrations of lack of self-esteem, and it is a habit that is usually acquired during early childhood. The lack of love and paternal care, the feeling of loneliness and contempt on the part of some people around generate an internal void and, consequently, the desire to fill it with something. One way to fill that void is to go shopping. In situations like this, income level isn’t even that important: some shopaholics manage to find more affordable versions of what they want.

3. Do not leave the house with just any clothes

How you look at the office, when going out with friends and relatives, to the theater or to a party, reveal how you see yourself. If a person puts on makeup or carefully chooses clothes that they will wear to the corner store or take out the trash, they are probably trying hard to hide their imperfections.

People like that are not sure of themselves and are afraid to face themselves as they really are. These are people who even have difficulties presenting themselves on social networks. Possibly, you won’t see their photo in the space reserved for their avatar, and their profile will have minimal information. The first and last name and other data can also be false.

4. Use phrases with a negative touch frequently

Insecurity and pessimism go hand in hand with low self-esteem. This manifests itself in expressions such as: “Maybe”, “Probably”, “I couldn’t”, “I was just lucky” and the like. It is important that such terms do not become a permanent part of your vocabulary.

When a narcissistic person brags about their team’s accomplishments, they tend to present the situation in such a way that they get all the recognition. But you will tend to believe that you are surrounded by so many talented people by chance. Obviously, this is just your imagination.

5. Change interests frequently

Today the person starts to learn crochet, in a month he will dedicate himself to photography, then to football, and so on. People with this characteristic try all kinds of hobbies, not because they are interested in all of them, but because they are not prepared to deal with the difficulties and setbacks that result from them. Possibly, the person has already faced the first problems: an amateur chef prepared a salad that was too salty or his first pies came out looking like pieces of coal.

Some negative comments on social networks can put an end to the desire to move forward: a poet at the beginning of his career writes weak rhymes and decides to abandon the pen. The “bad artist” is not aware that, initially, no one is exempt from mistakes. With that comes worry, a tendency to label yourself as a failure, and a desire to look for something that is easier to do.

6. Don’t put your cell phone down in public

The internal feeling of inferiority is usually revealed, among other aspects, by the fact that the person “gets glued” to the cell phone when in a restaurant, cinema, bar or other public places. It’s one thing to respond to an important message or answer a call, and another is to take advantage of the companion’s trip to the bathroom to check out what’s going on on social media.

Boredom isn’t always the reason: insecure people want to look important and busy. They think they’ll be seen as idiots if they just stare out the window or enjoy the music playing in the background. In other words, they would feel discredited in front of people whose opinions will never be known.

7. Competing all the time with people around you

Even people with the lowest of self-esteem don’t want to feel less important than everyone else. This leads to internal competition with others and secondary ways of seeking support and approval.

Sometimes the individual is willing to feel good at the expense of others—for example, less experienced co-workers whose results are obviously not so good. Or else it tries to introduce a competitive spirit into environments where it shouldn’t. For example, struggling to prepare an elaborate dish during a simple barbecue or wanting to put the baby to sleep as soon as possible. People with low self-esteem do not see such situations as commonplace, but as a true dispute in which what is at stake is the ego.

8. Peel off the skin at the corner of the nails

In this category also fit the customs of trying to remove invisible hair, frantically rubbing the fingers and the like. These are all manifestations of compulsive self-injury or neuroses linked to some type of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). They are observed mainly in people who marginalize themselves. 9. Oversleeping

In some situations, we really need time to recover: in cases of illness, time zone changes, long trips, stress, among others. But when an adult sleeps more often than in childhood and adolescence, there may be reason to be concerned.

Sleep disturbances (both insomnia and oversleeping) are classic signs of depression. In turn, the problem may be associated with a lack of self-esteem. A very long period of sleep has to do with a lack of motivation to perform a certain activity or with a bad mood. Of course, it is necessary to analyze the general state in an integrated way, taking into account other factors.

10. Taking too long to choose a dish from the menu

A person with low self-esteem tends to change their minds, and is not sure about their own choices and preferences. It is a characteristic that can be manifested when choosing a dish at a restaurant, for example: the individual initially thinks of ordering fish, but after 5 minutes he switches to a steak, and after 10 minutes he just wants ice cream and coffee. This certainly has nothing to do with the fact that the person is going to the restaurant for the first time in a long time.
