10 Projects and groups of ordinary people who came together to help the underprivileged on cold winter nights

Winter came with everything in some parts of Brazil and, despite the cold weather, many people have warmed their hearts when it comes to helping others in difficult times. A 2015 IPEA survey indicated that there are around 100,000 people living on the streets in the country. This population is composed of individuals from different realities who need urgent help.

SP Invisível is an organization that works to raise people’s awareness so that they look more closely at homeless people in the city of São Paulo. The idea is to treat these individuals who need help with food, warm clothing and, above all, dignity, so that they can restructure and return to a dignified life within the family and back into society.

Núcleo Assistencial Anjos da Noite, founded by Kaká Ferreira and José Amato, has been working since 1989 to bring together volunteers of all ages and religious beliefs who are willing to donate to others. They get together to donate warm clothes and blankets, meals and words of support for people who need help, they also work to rescue self-esteem and the possibility of social reintegration.

Delivery by SP is a social mobilization that helps homeless people by distributing clothes and blankets. In addition, they work on the socialization of those who are often invisible to the majority of the population. They do monthly night outs with the help of people who volunteer to deliver help, love and solidarity.

An international organization, founded in 1865 in England and present today in 130 countries, which fights against extreme poverty, including the street population and vulnerable people in general. Every year, in winter, they intensify the campaign, which accepts donations of money, clothes and blankets, which they themselves pick up at the donor’s address; To do this, just register on the site.

Geivison Carvalho is a barber from the city of Baixada Fluminense, just 22 years old, who thought of a way to help needy people who live on the streets and who need to deal with this year’s harsh winter. He decided to exchange his work for donations of clothes, coats and blankets, to warm everyone who needs it and cannot afford it.

This project works with what they call Housing First which is the combination of actions that guide the street population so that they can return to a life in society. They provide food and clothing, but they also treat people in search of their dignity. For this, they provide shelter, financial education, professional training, therapy, return to the family and inclusion in the community.

Concerned about the situation of abandonment of the street population, this group organized itself to help and ensure that these people do not only have food. They also work on valuing people, listening to their stories of losing jobs, homes, families and their own identity. Volunteers try to welcome people in their particularities, so that they get out of this situation and return to live in the social sphere.

This is an innovative project that created the first collaborative bank of resumes from homeless people, to connect them with potential employers. The idea arose from the need to end the prejudice suffered by this part of the population, since many of them have talents and abilities and just need an opportunity to get back to having a dignified life.

Sefras is an organization dedicated to helping people in need, including homeless people, by providing food, shelter and promoting educational activities. This winter they are available to receive donations of warm clothing or funds to buy clothes and blankets to distribute to the homeless. They operate in 3 states and handle around 141,000 people a year.
