10 Inconspicuous Fitting Details to Make Sure You Don’t Leave the Store Without Buying Something

For many of us, shopping is a way to relieve stress and also relax. It’s good to walk around the store, choose some clothes and then try on new ones in the fitting room. looks🇧🇷 However, have you ever thought about how much work marketers have put into getting you to buy more stuff?

we from awesome.club we tried to find out a little more about the importance of a fitting room for a store and one of our authors decided to investigate what are the details that lead us to buy.

My name is Julia and I, like many people, sometimes make impulse purchases. And when I get home and look at the purchased item, I think: what made me buy this ugly bag of nondescript color? And I decided to investigate the reasons.

Shopping online, one in five goods purchased is returned to the seller, whereas in face-to-face purchases, only one in ten is returned. For the seller it is extremely important to reduce the number of returns, so stores use some tricks in their space, as well as in the changing rooms.

Customers who use changing rooms are seven times more likely to make a purchase than those who don’t. Also, if a customer was served by a salesperson, they are likely to buy more. Therefore, stores take the layout of facilities very seriously, something we usually don’t pay attention to. In the post are some tips that will help you avoid impulse purchases.

Mirror

Undoubtedly, the mirror must be large enough for the client to see himself fully. However, stores often use mirrors that stretch the silhouette. In them, the person looks a little thinner than he really is, and the clothes fit better.

I checked: in fact, in some fitting rooms I looked much thinner than in the mirror at home. This really stimulates the experience of trying on more clothes.

Floor

In luxury stores, the floor is usually covered with carpet. Walking on a soft floor is much more pleasant, so customers stay in the store for a long time, looking at the products more, which increases the likelihood of purchase.

Stores that do not have carpet in the sales area seek to provide comfort to customers, at least in the changing rooms, and place some type of special floor or rug there. It’s true, this is much more comfortable than standing on a cold tile: it’s cozier and we don’t feel the time passing, which reduces our rush.

hooks and hangers

The customer should not think about where to hang not only the clothes he plans to try on, but also his own. It’s terribly boring to spend time trying to fit a bunch of hangers onto two tiny hooks! Personally, in this case, I start to get upset and I want to leave as soon as possible.

Cleaning

Seeing this garbage on the floor, I wanted to leave without proving anything: now I’ll have to step on the dirty, cold floor with bare feet. Do I really need these pants?

It’s hard to relax when thinking about how to avoid stepping on trash and dust on the floor. In a good store, cleanliness is monitored and prioritized, because even the slightest appearance of clutter automatically creates the impression that all products in the store are “not top notch.”

curtain or door

in stores fast fashion, changing rooms are separated from the hallway by curtains, not doors, and there’s a good reason for that. Firstly, it becomes much easier for store employees to clean them, and secondly, the curtains create a sense of anxiety in the customer: he does not feel fully protected and seeks to leave this space quickly. the stores of fast fashion are focused on making customers make quick decisions and releasing the fitting room for the next customer as quickly as possible. A dressing room with a door, on the other hand, gives a feeling of security, so the customer is more comfortable and in no hurry.

I checked fitting rooms of both types and realized that with the door you feel much safer and calmer: stop running because you are not afraid that someone will look inside. I also noticed that in the dressing room with the door I undressed more slowly and looked at the details of the clothes more carefully.

mirrorless dressing room

The absence of a mirror in the dressing room is a practice of expensive boutiques. There is a reason for this: the customer is forced to leave the dressing room to look at himself in a large mirror in the common area, and there he finds the salesperson who tells him how the dress turned out and what it can match. And we know that when you interact with the seller, the probability of buying more pieces increases, right?

By the way, have you ever paid attention to the fact that there are usually few mirrors in the sales areas? And this is no coincidence. Once, for a long time I was looking for a normal mirror in the sales area, I couldn’t find it and so I went to the dressing room. And, in fact, that’s exactly what the salesperson wants from the customer.

No queue for the fitting room

The more tasters, the more likely the customer is to make a purchase.

The longer the queue, the more customers will leave the store without buying. Experts have calculated that if up to four people stay at the dressing room entrance, 3.6% of customers will not wait to try on their chosen pieces. And if there are more than ten people, then 19% of visitors will abandon their potential purchases. That’s why the more tasters, the better.

In a large store with a sufficient number of fitting rooms, the peak hour occupancy rate is around 70%. That is, it is likely that the simultaneous occupation of all tasters will never occur. This will allow employees to pick up items left in them and help all customers.

I must say that I’m a person who can’t even stand a small line: for some reason, standing in it seems a little humiliating to me. Of course, I want to get rid of this feeling as soon as possible, so I leave the store without buying.

Lighting

This is practically the most important detail in the changing rooms, and it seems strange that not all stores have the correct lighting. In a good dressing room, the light should be strong enough and at the same time soft and “warm”. If the fluorescent lamps are located high in the ceiling, the customer will notice irregularities in their body that would go unnoticed under other lighting. This is so frustrating that it takes up the attention that should be devoted to shopping. Now, what is this cellulite? And these terrible wrinkles on my face?

In the changing rooms, where there is lighting at the top of the ceiling and also at the front, things are quite different. In them, unnecessary shadows on the client’s face and body are excluded, and he can fully focus on clothes.

fitting room location

The fitting rooms are never positioned at the entrance of the store, as this area is dedicated to the display of the most attractive products: news and special offers. Therefore, from the first seconds these offers stimulate the customer to buy and arouse their interest in the product.

It is best to locate the fitting rooms at the end of the store, as this allows the customer to see as many options as possible: by the time you reach the fitting room, you will have already looked at and touched half of the pieces in the store and will take a few more to try on.

Seller call button

This is rarely seen in the market. fast fashion, but it is common in high-end stores. If I got a wrong size garment, to try on another one, I have to get dressed, leave the dressing room, find the correct size and return to the dressing room, where I will have to undress again. Few people are capable of such a feat: you have to really like an outfit to perform this heroic act. I usually give up.

Therefore, the button to call the salesperson serves as an excellent sales increment for the store, as, in this way, the customer can simply ask to bring a piece of another size without leaving the dressing room and the purchase probability increases.
