In 2013, a joint analysis by the American College of Cardiology, the Heart Association and the Obesity Society of the 15 most popular diets revealed what they all have in common. Apparently, those who have devised these regimens advise eating lots of vegetables, avoiding added sugars, and cutting down on processed foods. However, they often forget a very important issue: the fact that some foods, no matter how healthy they are, should never be eaten on an empty stomach.
Here in the awesome.club, we have compiled some products that are often called healthy but not recommended for breakfast. Read this list to the end to find two extra points about a food that is actually good to eat on an empty stomach and a diet that is, in fact, very healthy.
1. Bananas
While there is a specific regimen called the “Banana Morning Diet” which promotes eating one or more bananas for breakfast and nothing else, consuming this fruit on an empty stomach may not be the best idea. It is true that they have potassium, fiber and magnesium, but they are also a very acidic food that contains a lot of sugar.
Eating acidic foods on an empty stomach can cause problems with your intestines, while a sugar spike in the morning can leave you feeling sleepy and lacking in energy after a few hours. These problems can be solved if you mix bananas with other foods.
2. Yogurt
While the idea of combining it with fruit for breakfast is healthy and promotes weight loss, not all yogurts are a good choice. Those sold on the market aren’t as healthy as you think, and they’re full of added sugars, even though the label says they’re 0% fat. Finally, not everyone contains enough protein. The safest option would be to opt for Greek yogurt and sweeten it with honey or fruit.
3. Instant oats
Oatmeal is a very healthy option for breakfast, as it is rich in fiber, vitamins, proteins and does not contain gluten. However, instant packs have a lot of added sugar, salt, and artificial colors. If you really don’t have the time to prepare a regular oatmeal dish, just choose instant oatmeal that has no sweetener and pay attention to its preservative content.
4. Raw greens and vegetables
While vegetables are generally healthy, eating them on an empty stomach can cause irritation in some people and even cause gas, bloating, and abdominal pain. One reason is the insoluble fiber contained in most green foods, which people with digestion problems should avoid.
5. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are rich in vitamins and nutrients and low in calories. However, they should not be consumed on an empty stomach as they can cause general pain and discomfort. Like some green vegetables, they contain soluble astringents that cause a reaction when mixed with gastric acid.
6. Citrus fruits
Eating citrus fruits for breakfast should be avoided by people diagnosed with diabetes or those with sensitive stomachs. Oranges, lemons and grapefruits can negatively interact with our digestive juices and cause irritation, burning and gastric problems. Also, high-carb fruits can raise morning sugar levels, which can be dangerous for diabetics. If you want to improve your digestive health, add walnuts to your breakfast.
7. Cold drinks
If taken for breakfast, cold drinks of any kind can irritate the stomach and intestines. You should especially be concerned about those that are carbonated as they cause bloating and a general feeling of discomfort. It is better to have a glass of warm water in the morning before breakfast as it improves digestion and circulation and helps you lose weight.
8. pears
Although pears are a healthy snack, with vitamins, potassium and low calories, it is advisable to avoid them for breakfast. This fruit contains raw fiber that can damage the delicate mucous membranes when consumed on an empty stomach.
This does not mean that they should be completely avoided. In fact, some studies show that people who eat pears are less likely to become obese and tend to eat a higher quality diet.
9. Cereals
A bowl of cereal may be a convenient breakfast food, but its high amount of sugar and refined carbohydrates is bad for you. Although at first you will feel full, this food will increase your blood insulin levels, and a few hours later you will start craving snacks while your blood sugar level is blocked.
A 2013 study compared obese adults who skipped breakfast with those who ate cereal and those who preferred eggs. The last group felt more satisfied and craved snacks less than the other two. Think about that the next time you’re trying to decide between having fried eggs or cereal for breakfast.
10. Vitamins
There is nothing wrong with taking a vitamin for breakfast, but only if it is properly balanced and combined with other foods. In most cases, the drink can end up being very low in calories and protein, but containing a lot of carbohydrates. To solve this problem, avoid sweetening your smoothie and find ways to add protein and fat, like the yogurt and avocado combination. Alternatively, you can take it with scrambled eggs.
Bonus: eat garlic and honey on an empty stomach
Surprisingly, garlic and honey are a very good combination of foods to consume on an empty stomach as they can help prepare the body to metabolize food in the most optimal way. Just mix 12 cloves of garlic, minced, with a jar of honey and leave in a dark place for a week. Take one scoop every day before your first meal for best results.
