There is a theory that babies cry at night to prevent their parents from conceiving another child. The author of this thesis, David Haig, suggests that such a “skill” was developed in the process of human evolution, since a mother without other children increases the chances of survival of the baby.

In addition, according to Haig, certain genes inherited from the mother or father define whether the child will cry at night or not. If these genes are received from the woman, then the baby will be interested in another pregnancy and will not bother the parents. If they come from the father, this will not happen, because (again, according to David Haig) the father will not be sure if he will be responsible for the next pregnancy.

After birth, a baby’s brain grows rapidly: during the first three months of life, it reaches 50% the size of an adult’s organ. However, already in the womb, the child is able to learn about the world. Experts believe that the fetus reacts to beams of light and learns to recognize not only the mother’s voice, but also, for example, her favorite song.

“Infantile amnesia”, in scientific language, is the name given to the phenomenon that prevents us from remembering the first years of life. Researchers still don’t agree on what causes this to happen, but one study has shown that it’s probably due to the faster formation of new brain cells, which replace the old ones, which in turn held the first memories.

If, during the first hour of life, you place a newborn on its mother’s belly, it will find the breast. This happens because maternal nipples smell the same as the amniotic fluid in which the baby is immersed inside the womb. By the way, it is during the formation of this liquid that taste preferences begin to develop. For example, according to experts, amniotic fluid can taste like garlic if the mother eats a lot of this food. In addition, when a child begins to eat adult food, he may be attracted by the aroma of dishes that his mother consumed during pregnancy.

Newborns see the world in white, black and gray. And their field of view is quite limited: objects that are more than 30 cm away look like blurry spots. They better distinguish faces and objects that are at a distance of 20 to 25 cm from their eyes, that is, approximately the same distance as the mother’s face is during breastfeeding.

This is because binocular vision (the ability to put together 2 images sent to the brain by the right and left eyes) is still developing.

Literally, children can live in their mother’s brain. Scholars analyzed 59 women who died between the ages of 32 and 101, and in 37 of them they found traces of the male Y chromosome, which only appears during pregnancy, when the suit shares cells with the mother.

This phenomenon is called microchimerism: the fetal cells penetrate through the placenta into the mother’s body and create their clones there. And these clones can remain there for many years: the oldest woman in whose brain a male chromosome was found was 94 years old.

A study carried out in laboratory rats allowed an important discovery: the stem cells of the fetus are capable of restoring the affected myocardium after the mother is the victim of a heart attack. Hina Chaudhry, who carried out the study, believes that, in this way, the fetus heals the maternal organism, increasing its own chances of survival.

And although it is too early to say that a similar mechanism exists in humans, the presence of stem cells in the mother’s body seems to support this theory.

During the first seven months of life, children cannot learn about the world using their fingers. They can even pick up things, but their motor skills are not yet developed to the point of exploring what is around them with their hands. However, the baby is able to control the tongue and lips well, so they use their mouth to “analyze” the objects around them. It’s called the oral phase.

Babies’ brains use more than 50% of the glucose that enters the body through food, while adults only use 20%. According to experts, this is one of the reasons why young children spend so much time sleeping. When the individual is sleeping, the glucose absorption process is much more efficient.

A newborn’s stomach is about the size of a hazelnut. That’s why they need to eat so often: there just isn’t room for much food in their tummy. However, this organ grows at great speed: two weeks after giving birth, the stomach is already the size of a chicken egg. But the need for frequent meals continues until the sixth month of life.
