10 Curiosities about the iconic series of the 1990s, “Um Maluco no Pedaço”, that made us travel in the past

Fresh prince of Bel Air conquered a multitude of fans and received many positive reviews because of its captivating, irreverent, fun plot, with a few touches of drama, which captured an entire generation. The series had a large number of passionate viewers who sat in front of the TV, eager to watch the next episode of Will and his family’s life in the luxurious neighborhood of Bel-Air. Ingenious plots and hilarious situations, in addition to a dose of madness, made this series a must-see program.

O awesome.club wants to tell you some of the most curious and surprising details of this emblematic program and so representative of the 1990s that it still continues to conquer viewers and fans willing to laugh a lot.

1. The location of the mansion

The beautiful house, which is actually a mansion, in which Will will live with his uncles when he arrives from Philadelphia and which appears in the opening of the series is not actually in Bel-Air (Los Angeles). If we want to visit this iconic place, we must go to the Brentwood neighborhood in Los Angeles.

2. The name of the series is inspired by a band, and not just any band

3. The series was temporarily canceled

Incredible as it may seem, NBC was on the verge of canceling the series after the fourth season ended. Fans of the fun adventures of Will and the Banks family were strongly opposed to the series coming to an end and managed to prevent its cancellation. Fortunately, another two seasons were released, bringing the total to six seasons.

4. Jada Pinkett Smith Came Into Will Smith’s Life

Will Smith met the woman who would later become his wife while still auditioning for the series that launched him to fame. Jada Pinkett auditioned to be Will’s girlfriend Lisa but didn’t get the part; however, she found the love of her life.

5. Bruce Springsteen and his “Dancing in the Dark” music video inspired the famous dance

An entire generation was marked by the unforgettable and famous dance step of Carlton Banks, Will’s rich and somewhat cocky cousin. This little dance became a form of celebration and was indispensable at parties where the character was present, not because it was cool, but because it was, let’s say … quirky. Apparently, actor Alfonso Ribeiro, responsible for bringing Carlton to life, was inspired by Bruce Springsteen’s video clip “Dancing in the Dark”, in which the singer dances with actress Courteney Cox, to create his famous dance move.

6. “In Philadelphia I was born and raised”

7. Newbie in the business

Before starting the series, Will had a career as a rapper: however, several situations led him to embark on the world of acting. The actor memorized both his sentences and those of his colleagues and mumbled (you could see him moving his lips) during the first few episodes due to his inexperience. Little by little, he improved until he became the great actor he is today.

8. The character had the same name as the actor

The final decision on his character’s name in the series was Will’s own. Out of all the names he could have chosen, he opted for the same as yours due to the advice of his co-star, Alfonso Ribeiro. The actor who gave life to the character Calrton Banks suggested that he choose a name by which he would be remembered forever.

9. Part of the story was based on facts

Apparently, the plot could have been invented and without any relation to reality. However, a sizable portion of the series was based on the life of music and television entrepreneur Benny Medina. This Dominican went through many economic difficulties and through really complicated situations until he managed to get to where he is today. At first, Benny would play himself on screen, but in the end, the role ended up in the hands of Will Smith.

10. The actor who plays Carlton has been on a tightrope

we could never imagine Fresh prince of Bel Air without the presence of Will’s rich and clumsy cousin. Even if, at first, his image was that of a serious guy, the truth is that many moments in the series would not have been the same without him, without his dances, his songs or some of his comments. But the story could have been different since, apparently, the president of NBC fired Alfonso after the pilot episode for not being satisfied with his way of acting. Luckily, it was nothing more than a scare, and Alfonso was reincorporated into the cast to present us with many unforgettable moments.
