From hyacinth macaws to elephants (that’s right), there are a number of NGOs doing wonderful work in Brazil. Browse with incredible.club and, who knows, you might even decide to help one of them?
Elephant Sanctuary Brazil
The mission here is to change the lives of captive South American elephants. Located in Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso, it was created in 2013 and is part of an international association that recovers animals recovered from captivity, some of them in critical condition. At the sanctuary, the elephants live in a safe environment where they can express their natural behaviors.
Blue Macaw Institute
The interesting thing about this NGO is that it is not only dedicated to studying and caring for the preservation of hyacinth macaws. Also included in the work of the organization are animals that co-inhabit with the bird in the Pantanal, such as toucans, hawks, owls, wild ducks and others. The work done by the institute increased the number of individuals in the region from 1,500 to 5,000 in less than 20 years.
Free Life Institute
Headquartered in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, the institute began its operations in 2015 and aims to develop projects for the rehabilitation and preservation of wild fauna. It also seeks to act to reduce animal trafficking in Brazil. By helping animals, Vida Livre says it believes it is also helping people. “All are free”, says the NGO’s website.
Golden Lion Tamarin Association
The association’s mission is to preserve the biodiversity of the Atlantic Forest, focusing on the golden lion tamarin. Created in 1996, in Rio de Janeiro, it has the goal of 2025 for the population of tamarins to reach 2,000 individuals living freely in an area of 25,000 hectares of protected forests. For this, it will also need to invest in the preservation and reforestation of its area of operation.
Pro-Carnivores Institute
Although it has its headquarters in Atibaia, in the interior of São Paulo, the Instituto Pró-Carnívoros develops projects throughout the country, with the aim of preserving carnivorous mammals and their habitats. Among the organization’s works are those involving wild cats, ocelots, Pantanal jaguars and bush dogs, in biomes such as the Atlantic Forest, Pantanal, Amazon and Caatinga.
Instituto Espaço Silvestre
The mission of the organization, founded in 1999 as Instituto Carijós, is more specific than its name suggests: to reintroduce the purple-breasted parrot in the Araucárias National Park, in Santa Catarina. The NGO’s idea is that its work can make the long-term existence of the species viable, as well as educating people about the parrot.
mucky project
Founded in 1985, Projeto Mucky concentrates its efforts on the preservation and study of endangered monkey species, such as marmosets, titi monkeys, monkeys and howler monkeys. Collected animals are offered veterinary care and protection. The organization, which is headquartered in Itu, in the interior of São Paulo, also tries to minimize the trafficking of these species, offering information to the population.
Gnome Ranch
Created in 1991 in Cotia, in Greater São Paulo, the ranch is a project by the couple Silvia and Marcos Pompeu and is dedicated to sheltering animals, most of them victims of abuse. Species are received even from public agencies, such as Ibama, and the Environmental Military Police. There are hundreds of animals in the place, some of which are not even part of the Brazilian fauna, such as lions and tigers.
invites
The Association for the Conservation of Wild Life was created in 2004 to preserve birds and monkeys that had been victims of accidents or abuse. Headquartered in Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul, it carries out research and projects for the preservation of these species, dreaming, in the words of the NGO itself, of human organization compatible with biodiversity.
walk
Anda is not an NGO, but it helps animals and in a different way: the name means Animal Rights News Agency. The mission of the journalists gathered around the project is to transform through information and thus guarantee the rights of animals. On the agency’s website, which is updated daily, there is a series of news about fauna not only in Brazil, but in other countries.
