Xangô was born in the city of Oyó, located in the western part of Nigeria. He was a seductive and very vain man, who knew how to control the power of fire and thunder. In one of the legends, it is said that he was the son of Oranian with Torosí, daughter of Elempe who was king of the Tapa (Nupê) nation.

As a child, Xangô was a big troublemaker, easily irritated and impatient, in addition to being bossy and not tolerating complaints from others. He was very fond of games involving fights and wars, usually always being the leader of the town’s chits.

Over time Xangô grew up, and ended up becoming a very brave and fearless man, always in search of emotions and adventures to explore. He had three wives: Iansã, Obá and Oxum.

Etymologically, the word Xangô is of Yoruba origin, where the suffix “Xa”, means “lord”; “angô” means “hidden fire” and “Gô”, can be translated to “lightning” or “soul”. Therefore, the name “Xangô” would mean “lord of hidden fire”. thunder.

After a while, Oxalá decided to visit his son Xangô, and knowing that Exú began to plot his revenge, he appeared in front of him asking for help to carry some barrels of oil, and as Oxalá was kind, he ended up helping him. Exú ends up spilling olive oil on his clothes, in addition to getting coal and salt dirty on him.

As soon as he noticed the dirt, Xangô’s father tried to wash himself in a stream, but it was of no use, as he was bewitched by Exú. Upon arriving at the gates of his son’s kingdom, no one recognized him, they ended up mistaking him for a beggar, so they ended up beating him and then arresting him.
