Men who shave their faces spend an average of 3,350 hours of their lives in the bathroom, according to statistics. Perhaps this is why wearing a beard has become such a huge fashion trend in recent years. The good news is that the man not only saves you time, he also attracts more women, leaving those smooth-faced guys in the dust.

Surprising as it may seem, women find bearded men more attractive, which increases their chances of finding a partner sooner. Not to mention the fact that a beard makes a man stand out from the crowd, overshadowing the rest at the time of conquest.

Scientists from several Australian universities, as well as the University of Turku in Finland, took an interest in this trend and set out to find out how beards influence women’s attitudes towards a man.

About 8,500 women were invited to participate in the experiment. Several groups of photos of the same men were shown. In each set there was a photo of a man without a beard, a photo showing the man with the stubble and, in the last photo, the guy with the full beard. Participants were asked to rate the degree of attractiveness of these men and to say whether they considered having a relationship (long-term or short-term) with them.

Most women found bearded men more handsome and said they would like to have a long-term relationship with them, while clean-shaven faces were chosen more for short-term relationships. A possible explanation for this is that the beard can be considered “a secondary male sexual trait, with the potential to provide direct benefits to women”.

Also, beards tend to soften features that are considered too masculine or even feminine, making men more attractive.

They add more charm to those who are seen as eternally serious, because they show that the person wants to let loose and have fun.
