Why generational curses are so hard to break and how to do it

Generational curses are a touchy subject. They are often misdiagnosed and misunderstood by modern witches. This makes breaking these curses even harder than breaking an average curse. As with most things in crafting, knowledge is power. So today we are going to delve into the reality of these curses and talk about what they are and why they are so difficult to deal with.

What is a generational curse?

Generational curses are essentially curses that, after being cast on a family member, pass down the family lineage to their children and to their children’s children, etc., affecting the lives of generations of people. Entire families are ruined by a single curse, often losing their financial well-being, health, social standing, and more. Often the same form of misfortune affects several family members, and sudden accidents and misfortunes are common.

Usually people who suffer from generational curses know that it affects them. It is usually well known in the family. Perhaps a great-grandfather pissed off a fortune teller and she cursed him, and now the story is passed down by every generation as an explanation for all the illnesses they experience.

If you’re just unlucky but don’t have a history of curses in your family, you’re unlikely to suffer from a generational curse for one simple reason. It’s not the curse that causes bad luck. It’s the story.

Why generational curses are so hard to break

Generational curses are difficult to break precisely because they are mythologized in the family. Under most circumstances, when the original caster of a spell dies, the vast majority of the power behind that spell also dies. This would mean that maybe the first generation will experience the curse and possibly the second generation as well, but after that the mage casting the curse is probably dead and the spell should stop. But that is not the case. The curse continues, affecting members of the family from generation to generation, as the belief the family has in the curse at this point fuels the spell!

At a certain point, the story the family tells about their curse becomes the curse. The magic may have gone long ago, but the family keeps themselves in turmoil by continuing to believe in this outside force ruining their lives. As anyone who studies magic knows, faith is a powerful force. The things you believe about yourself, your world, and your circumstances determine your experience. Your beliefs direct your energy and if your energy is wrapped around the idea that your life is going to be hell because of a curse and there is nothing you can do about it, that is what will happen.

Curse breaking methods can affect generational curses. I know this seems totally at odds with what I just said. How can you break a curse when the actual curse has been gone for generations? This comes back to faith again. In these cases, curse-breaking methods actually serve to alter the beliefs of those affected, not the spell itself. By casting a spell to break the curse, the family now believes the curse is broken. When their beliefs change, they stop causing bad luck and unhappiness in their lives. This only works if belief in the curse-breaking method is stronger than belief in the curse! If you doubt the validity or effectiveness of the spell, you will likely still experience the effects of the curse. Think of it as a sort of placebo effect cure for generational curses.

This can be useful in situations where rooting out the faith is unlikely. For older family members, or family members particularly affected by the curse, it may be nearly impossible to change the underlying beliefs. Convincing the logical mind that something for which there is a mountain of evidence is a lie is no easy task. When this happens, this placebo cure can be a lifesaver. The more theatrical and gritty the cursebreaker is, the better anything that makes them feel like something real was done to lift the curse.

How to break a generational curse

Ok, if you’re not worried about getting someone to break their belief in the curse, how do you go about breaking it? Changing ingrained beliefs is no easy task! Believe it or not, if you suffer from a generational curse, you have already started breaking it just by reading this post. Knowing that your belief is the source of your unhappiness is a major blow to the stability of that belief. From here, completely destroying faith is straightforward.

  1. First, write down any beliefs you have about the curse
Write down each one, from the details of how the curse works to the impact it had on your life. Find all the evidence you can find of this curse and make a list so you can proceed methodically. If you’re working with other family members to break the curse as well, let them make their own lists as well. You can also try this as a group activity, where you make a single list and do the following exercises as a group. It just depends on your personal preferences and how your family works together.
  2. Now is the time to poke holes in those beliefs
This next part of the process is very formulaic, but it takes time. Feel free to do this in batches as you must do this for EVERY belief you wrote down. You will first write down the belief you are working on and then ask a series of questions that will lead you to conclude that the belief is false, or at least possibly not true. It looks something like this.

Believe: The curse made me miss this great job opportunity last summer.

Ask: Is it possible that something other than the curse was the reason I didn’t get this job?

Answer: This is where you really need to make an effort and come up with all sorts of things that are NOT the curse that might have influenced this job opportunity. Maybe you didn’t put enough effort into your resume, maybe you were nervous during the interview, maybe another candidate was just more qualified, or the job just wasn’t a good fit for you. Really work to poke holes in that belief.

Ask: Can I say with certainty that the curse caused me to lose this opportunity?

Answer: No, there are too many factors to know for sure.

Continue in this manner, asking questions that will poke holes in your beliefs, until you reach a point where you can state clearly that the belief is either not true or cannot be proved to be true. You don’t really have to prove it’s completely wrong, you just have to cast doubt on it. This may require one question or eight questions. Just keep going until the belief is destabilized.

After doing this to one belief, move on and do it to the next. Continue until you have gone through this process for each individual belief. This can take a long time! You don’t feel like you have to do this whole thing in one giant marathon. Take breaks when needed, break it up into multiple sessions, tackle 3 beliefs a day until this list is complete. Just go through the entire list in a way that works for you.

  1. After you have refuted each and every one of these beliefs, cleanse yourself and your home
If it takes you several days to work through these beliefs, you may also want to clean up between sessions where you work on your beliefs. This process excites a lot of weird energy and while you may feel liberated and empowered at times, it can also cause negative emotions or energies to surface. While it’s okay to sit with those feelings and acknowledge them, you don’t want them to hang out indefinitely. Pay attention to the uncomfortable feelings you feel during your Question Time, write them down, analyze them, and see what they tell you about your beliefs. When you’re done, clean yourself and your home so you don’t get stuck carrying those feelings around.

This also helps put you back in a neutral place so you can identify new sensations that may arise between sessions. The mind continues to work on problems even when you’re not consciously thinking about them, so it’s possible that your beliefs will continue to deteriorate or you’ll have cognitions and feelings related to the process if you’re not working on it. Being in a neutral space allows you to identify when this is happening so you can respond to it immediately. If you find this, journaling is an excellent tool. Allow yourself to feel the things your subconscious is offering you (even if it’s uncomfortable) and see what conclusions and disclosures it might lead you to in the process.

  1. Build new beliefs to replace the old ones
Now is the time to create a replacement for every belief you have questioned or proved wrong. If your old belief was, “I can’t get a good job because of the curse,” your new belief is, “I can get a great job because I’m a worthwhile applicant.” If your old belief was, “Everyone in my family will get cancer because of the curse,” your new belief is, “My family will get cancer because of poor health choices. I can significantly reduce my chances of getting cancer by living a healthy lifestyle.”

You can do this when you end each set of beliefs or when you end each individual belief.

  1. Use these new beliefs in your daily life
Now that you have new beliefs, it’s time to make sure they’re rock solid. Pick 3-5 of the biggest ones you really think would benefit if you…
