Who was São Geraldo Magela and the beginning of its history

Saint Geraldo was born on April 23, 1726, in the city of Muro Lucano, in southern Italy. He was the son of a housewife and a tailor, his father passed away when he was just 14 years old.

The death of his father, in addition to sadness, brought financial difficulties to the family. First São Geraldo went to work in a tailor shop where he was treated very badly by his boss, until he could no longer tolerate this situation.

He then went to work for the Bishop of Lacedonia, where he remained for approximately 3 years until the Bishop’s death. This is an important part of the story to understand who São Geraldo Magela was, because it was during this period that he had a more intense and direct contact with religion and the Catholic Church.

After the death of the Bishop, São Geraldo, then 19 years old, returned to Muro Lucano and opened his own tailor shop and his business quickly began to prosper.

From the money he earned, he took what was needed for his mother and sisters and the rest he gave to the poor. This attitude also illustrates very well who São Geraldo Magela was.

Who was São Geraldo Magela for Christianity and the Catholic Church

To São Geraldo, God granted the gift of bilocation, that is, he was able to be in two places at the same time. And besides, he was able to see visions and make prophecies.

Unlike many saints, he was not a priest or friar, but his knowledge of religion, faith and spirituality enchanted him and made him always sought out to talk about these matters.

That’s why today we also know who Saint Geraldo Magela was, because at that time he was well known throughout southern Italy, for his spirituality and all his goodness.

“O Saint Gerald, heavenly friend of the unfortunate, when we remember the great miracles you performed in life, admirably increased after your precious death, it seems to us that they cry out to us: Trust! Confidence! Have confidence!

We know very well that the favor we ask is great and far beyond our merits. We even recognize ourselves to be more worthy of punishment than favors; for without doubt the punishment of our sins is just, the good that we lack, and the afflictions and difficulties that make us beg. Indeed, we bring on ourselves and those dear to us the wrath of God, voluntarily transgressing the divine precepts and allowing others to do the same. We cry now all our faults.

Ask, oh affectionate Saint Geraldo, ask the good heavenly father to forgive us. Although it is just for us to be punished for our sins, remove from us and our loved ones the scourges of divine justice. Obtain for us, through the merits of the sublime virtues that made you an eternal friend of God, the grace that we confidently ask for in this prayer. O Saint Gerard, our friend, our miraculous benefactor, pray for us to Jesus and Mary, and we will certainly be answered.”
