What looks like dandruff on your pillows or couch may be nits (lice eggs): the juice that eliminates these invaders in one go.

Not only mosquitoes make our days hell, there are other fearsome insects that can endanger our health. For example, ticks are very dangerous to humans and animals as they can transmit important bacterial diseases. When they stick to the skin and sting, we may not feel any pain or discomfort, at least initially.

Therefore, if we go on an excursion to nature, when temperatures are high, the first thing to do is check it. We must observe the different parts of the body to make sure that we have not attracted any ticks. Another small animal of almost imperceptible size that could transmit epidemic diseases to us is the louse.

This tiny parasite, just a few millimeters long, feeds on blood and can literally infest human beings, whether children or adults. It adheres to hair, but also to various fabrics, which is why we can find it between the sheets, on the mattress or on the sofas at home.

They lay many white eggs, called nits, which we could often mistake for simple dandruff. After about seven days they hatch and become adult lice in a couple of weeks. After a pediculosis, or infestation, in a family member, it would be best to resort to specific treatments. We must also treat the different items of clothing, quilts and sheets to try to eradicate every last trace.

As for clothes and sheets, we disinfect them in the washing machine at high temperatures, at least 60 degrees, or leave them outdoors for two days. Our grandmothers, in these cases, also used white vinegar, both inside the washing machine and mixed with baking soda, to spray it on the fabrics.

Other tricks

In addition to vinegar, to eliminate lice from the home permanently, we can wash the fabrics by adding lemon juice. We sprinkle the cushions with baking soda for a few hours and keep them outside, then wash them with water and salt, a natural disinfectant. We seal any soft toys or bouncers inside airtight plastic bags for at least 48 hours, so the lice die.

Essential or vegetable oils could also help us keep lice away from our home. Thus, we can choose between lavender, eucalyptus, tea tree, rosemary, mint and thyme oil to also prevent its arrival. We add a few drops when washing sheets, pillows and sofa covers, or inside the bucket to clean the floors.

Let's remove hairy carpets from the house and place them outside to let them air out, before applying anti-lice sprays or vinegar and baking soda.
