What is the Sacral Chakra? Understand the second chakra and how to balance it!

The Sacral Chakra is also the second primary chakra in the Vedic tradition. Also known as the sacral chakra or umbilical chakra, it is called Svadhishthana in Sanskrit, which means ‘the place of stabilization of being’ or ‘seat of my own self’.

The energy of this chakra is linked to relationships, sexual desire and creativity, and therefore it is commonly seen as the source of life and creation. When it is working correctly, you will have a continuous energy flow throughout your body, in addition to learning lessons related to emotional bonds and a healthier and more pleasurable sex life.

Such is the importance of this power point in life, that we decided to write an article especially dedicated to it, so that you can understand topics such as how it works and, consequently, you can apply your knowledge to live a life with more harmony and balance.

In this article, we will also present tips on how to identify your imbalance and effective ways to balance it. Have you ever thought about having a life with more pleasure and energy? Find out how next.

The Sacral Chakra is one of the 3 lower chakras. As we will show, it has striking features such as a mantra and a specific color. In this section, in addition to presenting these characteristics, we also present their relationship with crystals, with parts of the body and with the senses. Check out.

The sacral chakra mantra has a subtle vibration linked to the element of water: the Bija Mantra ‘Vam’. To chant it, pronounce the word ‘Vam’, repeating it often and concentrating on both articulation and awareness of the sounds of this mantra. Thus, you can awaken your energy.

If you prefer, you can visualize the color of this chakra, orange, while chanting your power mantra. The color orange is associated with the typical energies of this chakra such as enthusiasm and happiness. In addition, it is a color of attraction, linked to the feeling of pleasure and sexuality.

The Sacral Chakra is located in the lower abdomen, near the perineum region. To identify it in your body, find the set of sacral vertebrae, located very close to the base of the spine, at the back between the hip bones.

Due to its location, it is linked to functions such as reproduction and personal development. In addition, its main functions are the ability to show your feelings, as well as determining how you interact with other people and beings.

Finally, as one of the great emotional centers of the body, the Sacral Chakra is related to sex, creativity and different processes of creation and power.

Due to its location, the Sacral Chakra is linked to the female genitals and the final portion of the digestive tract, including the large intestine and anus.

In addition to these structures, this chakra governs the innermost portions of the female reproductive system, the bladder and kidneys. Therefore, be aware of problems in these regions as they may indicate Sacral Chakra imbalance.

The Sacral Chakra governs the adrenal glands, which are responsible for producing hormones that help with the regulatory processes of blood pressure, metabolism and even the immune system.

This chakra is also associated with the regulation of hormones such as cortisol, the stress hormone, and therefore it is closely linked to emotional health. According to its symbol, a lotus flower with 6 orange petals, the sacral chakra is associated with the sense of taste, since the mouth is also part of the digestive system, one of its areas of activity.

Among the areas in which the Sacral Chakra acts, one can point out personal development and prosperity. Therefore, its power of action extends from fields such as well-being, even the development of a business or career.

Because it is connected to the processes of creation and the encounter with pleasure, the Sacral Chakra is also aligned with the energy of sex and desire.

Since the Sacral Chakra is related to orange colors and, according to some traditions, to golden yellow tones, stones connected to this chakra have this color. As examples, check out the following list. We also include the areas related to these chakras, in which each one of them acts:

1) Carnelian: the stone of courage. Develops creativity, motivation, leadership, courage and endurance;

2) Eye of Tiger: the stone of the mind. It establishes an energetic grounding and strengthens your individual power. This is excellent for releasing fear, which often affects this chakra;

3) Amber: the stone of decision. It supports and clears energies that block this chakra. Can be substituted for copal;

4) Orange calcite: the stone of creativity. Relieves anxiety and stress, as well as improving self-confidence.

Other essential stones for this chakra are: sunstone (orange), goldstone (popularly called sunstone, but it is of artificial origin) and aragonite. To learn how to use them, read the corresponding section later in this article.

The good functioning of the Sacral Chakra is easy to perceive. As it is associated with energies such as pleasure and happiness, be aware of the following symptoms to diagnose whether your chakra is functioning properly.

When the Sacral Chakra is balanced, you will feel feelings of pleasure and experience more abundance, creativity, happiness, as well as being filled with a sense of fulfillment and well-being.

People who have this chakra in balance are essentially trusting, generous and radiate a powerful energy of enthusiasm and vivacity. In addition, other signs of balance are:

1) Change in the way you interact with animals, people, food, nature and spirituality;
2) Development of intuition, emotional balance, increased creativity, improved emotional health and greater sexual intimacy.

When you are out of balance, you will feel insecure, uncertain and tend to have difficulties dealing with life changes, which can directly affect your mind and body.

In addition, physical symptoms such as kidney failure, pain in the lower back, muscle spasms, constipation, cold, real and urinary infections, gynecological cysts, infertility, arthritis, irregular menstruation, sexual impotence, fever and even infertility are symptoms associated with imbalance of the sacral chakra.

Other psychological and emotional symptoms include: depression, low self-esteem, detachment, jealousy, envy, fear and frigidity.

If you experience any of the symptoms noted in the Sacral Chakra imbalance section, you should be concerned. But calm down, we are here just to help you. We show below a series of tips, with effective techniques, to restore the energy of your Chakra. Prepared? So take a deep breath and let’s go.

The element of the Svadghishthana chakra is water. Therefore, since this chakra controls the liquid in the body, it is very important that you practice activities linked to or close to the water element so that you restore energy in this power point.

So invest in swimming, canoeing, surfing or, when you need it, take a dip in a river, beach, take a waterfall bath or simply meditate by a lake. If you prefer, you can be more in touch with this element, either in a pool or even having a fountain inside your house.

Meditation is undoubtedly one of the best ways to restore your balance and align with the energy of the chakras. To meditate with this chakra, have a carnelian and place it close to it, in the region close to the perineum.

Then, imagine an orange-colored light coming out of your crystal and surrounding the sacral chakra area, as if it were a powerful wheel that revolves around your body. Then, imagine your chakra opening. If you prefer, you can visualize your symbol, the orange-petaled lotus flower, unfolding as you meditate. Perform this meditation once a day for at least 11 minutes.

Breathing exercises are highly recommended for restoring your Sacral Chakra energies. To practice mindful breathing, sit in a comfortable position and breathe in through your nose for a count of 4. Then, hold your breath for a count of 2, then finally exhale through your mouth for a count of 4.

As you breathe in, imagine the air flowing to your chakra area, orange in color. As you exhale, imagine gray smoke originating from your chakra area and exiting your body through your mouth. Practice this exercise whenever you need it.

If you wish, you can practice the following Yoga postures to improve your Chakra balance and restore your energies. Goddess Pose (Utkata Konasana) is excellent for bringing you into alignment. To practice it, stand with your feet apart and pointing to the sides. Bend your knees, bringing your thighs parallel to the floor and align your knees with your shoulders.

Finally, squat down and do the Anjali Mudra position, bringing your hands together in front of your heart. Other essential postures for the Sacral Chakra are:

1) Inverted Warrior Pose (Viparita Virabhadrasana);
2) Intense Stretch Pose with Feet Wide apart (Prasarita Padottanasana C)
3) Clamp Pose (Paschimottanasana)
4) Reclining Goddess Pose (Supta Baddha Konasana).

Since each Chakra is associated with a color, you can use the Sacral Chakra’s color, orange, to align it.

For this, be in eye contact with this color throughout the day. Dress with it, or, if you prefer, include accessories of this color in your routine such as bracelets, watches and, even better, belts, since it is close to your chakra region. Orange crystals such as carnelian can also be used.

If you prefer, you can decorate elements of your home with this color. Finally, visualizing the color orange in your meditations or throughout the day will help with this attunement process.

Another effective way to balance your Sacral Chakra is through chanting your mantra, ‘Vam’. Chant it constantly to open your chakra so you have more pleasure, taste for things and take control of your life.
