Myths and truths about incorporation into Umbanda

Many Mediums can’t even set foot in an Umbanda terreiro for fear that they can “incorporate a spirit” in the middle of the session. But is incorporation really that easy? Why do some even unintentionally incorporate and other Mediums have difficulty? How does the incorporation in Umbanda?

The history of incorporation into Umbanda

Umbanda was not always an organized religion as it is today, and one of the great evolutions that it achieved was the possibility of indoctrinating entities that wished to work in partnership with Mediums. Incorporation has always happened even in the most traditional religions, such as Catholicism. However, incorporation into Umbanda was adopted as a way to allow spirits in search of light to manifest. All this for the benefit of the brothers who karmically needed to work as “horses”, as well as for the benefit of the brothers in need who looked for a terreiro.

Why are people afraid to “embed”?

The lack of information and guidance for an adequate bibliography makes many children of saints who feel “vibrations” afraid to incorporate. This is because of the stories they hear about leaving their own bodies, passing out, being affected by night visits, being possessed forever and even passing through because of incorporating an entity or an obsessor. Our objective here is to demystify these myths and explain energetically how the process of incorporation in Umbanda.

Incorporation is the name given to the mediumistic process where a “device”, that is, a medium communicates with a lightworking spirit. However, there is no real incorporation, for if a soul left a body, it would die. What exists is a contact between the medium’s mind and the spirit’s mind, and that is why many report that, sometimes, against their mental desire, they realize that their mouths are saying what the entities blow into their minds. Therefore, this process is telepathic and the name given is psychophony.

Why do Mediums drink and smoke when incorporated?

Smoking and drinking are spiritual vehicles for unloading and transmuting negative energies in Umbanda. Therefore, in serious centers, the unrestricted use of alcohol or tobacco is not allowed; this use must be conscious and only intended for cleaning. Much of the exaggeration in the use is due to psycho-spiritual imbalances of the medium itself, and not of the entity. Therefore, it is necessary to be prepared physically, emotionally and spiritually to start development.

Is the process of incorporation into Umbanda dangerous?

The right word is not danger, but complexity. Incorporation is a spiritual process as complex as a mathematical formula or the construction of a building, and therefore requires attention from the heads of terreiros and Mediums. It is essential to follow the preparations that are customary in Umbanda: shelter the day before, unloading bath, smoking of the House, support of the guardians, firmament of candles and scratched points, points sung under the firmness of the atabaque. Without this protection, incorporating can be a risky process, as it can give way to a mocking spirit that is not interested in spiritually evolving.

Why are there Mediums who incorporate in Umbanda and others don’t?

Mediumship is a spiritual debt that a soul undertakes to heal by reincarnating on our planet. However, there are several forms of mediumship, ie; various ways to serve spiritually. There are mediums who hear, who see, who psychograph, who intuit, who dream, who bless, who pray…. In short, there are an infinity of possible jobs and each one of them was offered as a gift to a soul that could handle it. So there is no worse or better; there are simply Mediums who need to work with this type of process and make a spiritual commitment in a casa de santo.
