What is intercession?

Many wonder what the difference is between prayer and intercession. When we pray, we connect with God with the most diverse possible intentions: thanking, asking for a blessing, a miracle or guidance. Prayer is often more personal.

Intercession is putting yourself in prayer for another person; it is to create a bridge between the one who needs prayer and God. The intercessor has humility, but boldly fights on behalf of his fellow man. We can see throughout the Scriptures that the need of the intercessor is mentioned several times. The Father seeks two things in his people: worshipers and intercessors.

“My intercessor is my friend, when tears flow from my eyes before God;

he pleads the cause of man before God, as one who pleads the cause of a friend.” (Job 16:20,21)

How to intercede for someone

The sacred secret to interceding in prayer for another person is empathy. Empathy derives from the word empatheia, which in Greek means “passion”. It means seeking to understand the feelings and emotions of the other, putting yourself in their shoes.

This is the first step in interceding for someone. When praying, you must have the ability to feel what the other person would feel if you were in the same situation they experienced. No judgments, no differences and an open heart!

Intercession can be done alone or with others who share the same faith. Begin your prayer by thanking God for being in His presence and asking Him to turn your gaze to a particular person or situation through His words. Mike Bickle, director of the International House of Prayer of Kansas City (USA), lists in his book “Growing in Prayer” the seven benefits of intercession. Are they:

1. Deepens intimacy with God

Intercession helps us grow in intimacy with God and transforms our hearts, as it allows the Word of God to become more present in our lives.

Our prayers for others affect our own hearts more than we realize.

2. Increases our understanding

When we pray for another person, we strengthen our faith. Intercession allows our access to spiritual revelations, as Paul stated in his prayer:

“I ask that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation, in the knowledge of him.

I also pray that the eyes of your hearts may be enlightened, that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.

and the incomparable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his mighty power.” (Ephesians 1:17-19)

3. Unleash the power of God

Intercession releases God’s power and justice as it changes the spiritual atmosphere of a relationship or even an entire community. Revival is released to a much greater extent when we intercede for those close to us. Said Jesus Christ:

Will not God grant justice to his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep making them wait?

I say to you, he will do them justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on earth? ” (Luke 18:7,8)

4. Unite us in community and in love

Intercession also unites our hearts to the people and places we pray for. It is practically impossible for us to pray for or with someone without caring, without feeling love for that person or group of people. More than that: interceding in prayer for another person is the purest demonstration of love for someone.

5. Renew faith

To intercede for someone is to put into practice what the Word of God presents to us; it is to elevate to God what he taught us, in a cycle of renewal of our faith. Praying strengthens our belief in the power of God, but praying for someone else shows how much we depend on the power that comes from the Father to act in this world.

6. Multiply blessings

God’s law teaches us that giving is better than receiving. As we give in prayer, interceding for someone else, the blessing will come back to us. It doesn’t matter who we pray for. Even when we intercede for people we don’t get along with, as Jesus directed us to do, we are blessed by these prayers. Every prayer of blessing for another person is a prayer that God returns to you and your loved ones.

“Give, and it will be given to you: a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be given to you. For as you use it, it will also be used to measure you.” (Luke 6:38)

7. Strengthens the heritage of God’s Word

The act of interceding gives us an “inheritance” in the people and places we pray for. Intercession is like a spiritual investment, giving us a sense of belonging and also an eternal blessing and joy in all the people and places we pray and serve.
