The spell of Oxalá

Powerful queen and master of death, Nanã was greatly envied for her wisdom. Oxalá was one of those who wanted to obtain this knowledge, so he married the Orisha. As there was no love in this relationship, I hope he cast a spell for the Orisha to get pregnant. The pregnancy happened, however, Omulu, son of this spell, was born with skin problems. As Nanã was very vain, she ended up abandoning her son until Iemanjá found him and became Omolu’s mother.

When I hope he discovered Omolu’s abandonment, he decided to punish Orisha. Therefore, he condemned her to have other children with anomalies. With that, the Orisha had to leave the divine territory.

Oxalá and the cult of the Eguns

The story says that Nanã invoked Eguns to punish and scare criminals. Thus, knowing this incredible power, Oxalá decided to bewitch the Orisha with a love potion. After marrying her, Oxalá discovered several of the Orisha’s secrets, including how to enter the mysterious Garden of the Dead.

When watching the ritual performed by the Orisha, Oxalá dressed as Nanã and ordered that all Eguns had to obey Oxalá. Since then, it is Oxalá who leads the Eguns and that is why the Cult of the Egungun is currently done by men.
