What Can’t You Do on Good Friday? 9 Bans!

Before we talk about what you can’t do on Good Friday, it’s good to remember that this is a Catholic church holiday.

For other religions, Good Friday can be experienced in other ways. Despite believing in the existence of Jesus Christ, they do not follow the same precepts as the Catholic Church.

There is ahistory” which I cannot say is true or not, but I still believe that it might even be true, that the ban on eating red meat on Good Friday was an agreement between a Catholic priest and fishermen in a region.

The agreement would be that with the prohibition of red meat, people would be obliged to eat fish on that day, and that a part of the sales would be sent to the church of that priest.

I don’t know if this is true or not. But we know that the Catholic Church for a long time used its influence to manipulate people, the witch hunt was a clear example of this.

Every woman who was declared a witch would have her property confiscated by the church, which would then own everything that belonged to the witch and her family.

Joan of Arc went through this.

What can’t you do on Good Friday? See 9 bans

Some older people and staunch Catholics, not only do they keep Good Friday, they keep the whole of Lent. (period before Passion Friday, or Holy Friday).

In this period, they stop doing some things because they think it is a sin, but despite still having a very expressive number of these more Catholic people, things are changing.

Umbanda practitioners, not all, but some houses open their work without the curimba (atabaque), which is covered throughout Lent as a sign of respect.

Other houses only do tours for Exus and Pombo Giras, as this post-Carnival period still exists here on planet earth, many mocking spirits, who wish to do evil, so “play” only to the left.

But in this article I’m going to talk of the prohibitions of the catholic church since the holiday is catholic.

1) Don’t eat red meat

Red meat is prohibited on Good Friday. According to the most Catholics, the meat represents the very flesh of Jesus and therefore its consumption is prohibited, some go 40 days without eating meat.

2) Don’t listen to music

Do not listen to music because, according to them, it is not a day to celebrate. This is a sad day, day that Jesus was crucified.

3) Don’t sweep the house

I loved this holiday when I was little, because on this day my mother wouldn’t let us sweep the house, wash the dishes or do anything else, in fact I think we were expected to be sad all day.

4) Alcoholic Beverage

Couldn’t drink for the same reason there was no kind of celebration for drinking drinks with alcohol.

5) Dancing

No way, you couldn’t show any kind of joy on this day. Nothing that would lead to less importance being given to the fact of Christ’s passion.

6) Sexual Relations

It was also forbidden the most Catholics stayed the 40 days without any type of physical relationship with their spouses.

7) Make up

Any kind of personal care was forbidden except bathing, putting on lipstick or using any kind of makeup is also on this list of prohibited.

8) Don’t drink soft drinks

I really don’t understand this prohibition, what’s wrong with soda other than the fact that it contains a lot of sugar and makes you fat?

But it is also a prohibited item on this day.

9) Do not participate in any kind of party

This prohibition has a greater meaning than it may seem. Parties are prohibited for we must not forget that the mocking spirits are still at large, and one of them can accompany you on your way home, or be co-responsible for something you do wrong.

What to eat on Good Friday?

As meat was forbidden on this day, the ideal was to eat fish, which despite being meat was not considered by the church as such.

The church then understood that all terrestrial animals and birds were considered meat, not fish, which ends up strengthening the “story” of the priest and the fisherman.

But, setting this prohibition aside, I believe that God and Jesus would not punish a son who ate meat on Passion Friday.

I’m here thinking, if the person has nothing left to eat but a piece of meat, would God punish him for feeding his family and himself on the meat?

Some might say why don’t you fast on that particular day?

Maybe because he hadn’t had food for a long time, and that was the only day food appeared on his plate.

But anyway, the intention of this article it’s not creating any kind of discussion about the subject, each one follows as they believe they have to follow.

In Umbanda we don’t eat red meat the day before work, this serves to facilitate communication with the spirits, make the approach for incorporation easier, as the digestion of meat is very slow and heavy.

Although everything we know about Holy Friday has been passed down by our parents or grandparents, we still hear some people create their own rules for this date.

You can, there is nothing to stop you from getting your nails done or getting your hair done or getting ready. This does not indicate a lack of respect for Jesus. So, you don’t have to worry about that aspect.

Can I have sex?

It can also, sexual intercourse is necessary to release energies and exchange these energies with our partner. So don’t worry about that either.

Can I drink alcoholic beverages?

If you want, the bars and restaurants will be open to serve people who go there to celebrate the holiday.

I can work?

Yes you can, but Good Friday is a holiday so nobody worksmost leave the cities for the coast or the countryside, trying to get away from the tumult of the city.

I would like to close this article by remembering that these prohibitions, or precepts, were not passed down by God or by Jesus Christ, this was all created by the man who insists on trying to manipulate people even today, therefore, what counts for spirituality is the sincerity of his heart, because there is no point in keeping it on holy friday and committing barbarities the rest of the year.
