We reveal the faces of 10 Brazilian stuntmen who performed in successful film and TV productions

In cinema and TV, examples of artists who dispense with the use of stunt doubles are rare. Many actors turn to these professionals to replace them in scenes that involve a dual role or those that require special skills, especially action scenes. There are also cases where the actors cannot be present at the set or filming and, because of that, need a stunt double to act in their place.

Despite the importance of stuntmen’s work, they keep out of the spotlight. To take an example, there are several Brazilian stuntmen working inside and outside the country who, although they often have their names credited in productions, their faces remain unknown to the general public.

10. Victor Hugo — Will Smith (Gemini Project2019)

Launched in Brazil in 2019, Gemini Project is doubly starred by Will Smith. In the film, the American actor plays a professional killer who has to fight his own clone, a version of him about 30 years younger, as a result of the use of 3D+ technology. In several scenes of the film that brought Will Smith younger, Brazilian stuntman Victor Hugo came into action. Despite the physical similarity (evidenced in the image below), digital effects were used to merge Will Smith’s image with that of Victor. This film marked Victor’s debut as a stuntman.

Before appearing in theaters, the Brazilian, born in Guarujá, but who currently lives in London, was already a model for famous brands, such as Tommy Hilfiger and Coca-Cola and also acted in musical theatre.

9. Raphael Martins — Robert Pattinson (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 12011)

In Breaking Dawn part 1 (2011), penultimate film by Twilight Sagain addition to having Brazilian landscapes as a backdrop, recording in Rio de Janeiro and Paraty, it also included Brazilian stuntmen in the cast who replaced the main actors, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.

8. Roberta Thaise — Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 12011)

While Raphael Martins, previously mentioned, was Robert Pattinson’s stunt double, Roberta Thaíse was chosen to represent Kristen Stewart in Breaking Dawn part 1 (2011). Born in Echaporã (Sao Paulo), the Brazilian revealed that she never considered herself Kristen’s look-alike, but recognized that she had similar traits, which enabled her to replace the actress when she was absent. This happened when the protagonists of the film had already left Brazil and, therefore, Roberta had to take Kristen’s place in the recordings.

In the scene in which she replaced the main actress, the Brazilian appeared from the back, inside a speedboat cruising in Paraty (as shown in the following video excerpt, released on Roberta’s social network).

7. Eduardo Marques Júnior — Pilot in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Among the scenes full of cars, motorcycles and trucks, there is the Brazilian, Eduardo Marques, pilot and stuntman, with extensive experience in speed competitions and rally. The Brazilian worked 10 years in shows from Disney and has already been highlighted in the events of X Games (“Olympics” of extreme sports).

To avoid the use of computer graphics, pilots involved in Mad Max, including the Brazilian, had to test all their skills to guide the most diverse vehicles (which can be seen in the photo below) with precision, following choreographed maneuvers. All this, in the midst of uneven terrain and high speed.

As one of the characteristics of a stuntman’s job is not to be noticed in a scene, Eduardo revealed that he cut his hair to camouflage himself among the characters in the film.

In 2019, the Brazilian residing in the United States, acted again as a stunt pilot in the film Frontier Operationstarring Ben Affleck and Oscar Isaac.

6. Ricardo Burgos — stunt double in the film venom (2018)

For anyone who is a fan of the “Marvel Universe” films, he has certainly seen the work of Ricardo Burgos in action, a stuntman who, among his functions, is interpreting falls in place of the actors. Ricardo has acted in several films, including Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and venom (2018), as well as TV shows and series.

Before starting his stunt career, the Brazilian participated in one of the water shows at Universal Studios Hollywood, driving a jet ski with his body on fire. The photo above shows Ricardo while he still belonged to the group of artists from Universal🇧🇷

5. Claudia Cox — Evangeline Lilly (series) lost🇧🇷

4. João Gabriel Pinheiro — Kit Harington (series game of Thrones🇧🇷

In addition to the diversification of scenarios around the world, recording in countries like Iceland and Morocco, the series game of Thrones also had a cast composed of people of different nationalities, among them, is the Brazilian, raised in Campinas, João Gabriel Pinheiro who acted in the series as an extra and stuntman.

Due to João Gabriel’s physical resemblance to Kit Harington who played Jon Snow, one of the main characters in the series, the Brazilian was chosen to replace the British star when he was sick.

João Gabriel participated in the filming of the penultimate episode (“beyond the wall”) from the seventh season and represented Kit (Jon Snow) running towards the frozen lake (check out the scene just below).

3. Lateef Dos Santos — Command in The Mandalorian (series)

The Mandalorian is the first serieslive action” of the Universe Star Wars which became even more popular, after one of its characters, who still did not have his real name revealed in the series, was affectionately called “baby yoda” or “Yodinha” (in allusion to Master Yoda from the movies Star Wars) and go viral as an internet meme. On the Serie, “baby yoda” is protected by Mando, a bounty hunter who is always seen wearing armor, not allowing to see his face.

Pedro Pascal is credited as Mando in the series and lends his voice to the character, but despite this, he is not the actor who plays most of the scenes. For this, there are 2 stuntmen who take turns interpreting Mando, and one of them is the Brazilian Lateef Crowder from Santos.

Lateef was born in Salvador (Bahia) and is an experienced stuntman who has participated in movies and TV. In addition to The Mandalorianhis most recent stunt work was in the film Frontier Operation (2019).

2. Stanley Ostrower — Pilot in Blindness essay (2008)

The movie cast Blindness essay (2008) was formed by several stars such as Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo and directed by Brazilian Fernando Meirelles. Behind the scenes of high-speed driving and risky maneuvers, there was another Brazilian, stuntman Stanley Ostrower who drove a car with cameras in the film.🇧🇷

Stanley has extensive experience in car racing and, in the movies, he has been sought after to perform controlled rollovers, jumps and skids. For Stanley, driving a car with cameras (shown in the figure below) is quite complicated, because in addition to performing the maneuvers and ensuring the safety of everyone around, it is also necessary to ensure that the film crew, who are also inside the vehicle, manage to capture the best angles and the best images.

Another of Stanley’s works for international cinema was in Omens of a Crime (2015) and also as a stunt driver, here in Brazil, in the film Stronger than the World — The Story of José Aldo (2016).

1. Jorge Só — Stuntman in Brazilian soap operas

Just like movies, in action and risk scenes, soap operas also resort to stunt work during filming. They risk falling, fire, running over, fighting and so many other things in the name of art. Jorge Só is one of the most famous stuntmen in Brazil who shares this profession with his wife, Denise and their children, Yuri and Yan, a family united by emotional ties and adrenaline.

Before becoming a stuntman, Jorge Só was a Brazilian canoeing champion and, recognized for his skill in the sport, an invitation arose for him to replace actor André De Biase in an episode of Unlimited Frame in the 80s, soap opera shown by Rede Globo. After that, he was a stuntman in other soap operas, remaining on the network for over 20 years.

Jorge decided to invest in the profession and created the agency “Só Ação” which plans the execution of dangerous scenes for TV and cinema. Since 2005, he has been a stuntman and commands the action scenes of RecordTV productions.
