We carry out 6 salon procedures at home and find out how to save money

Women spend an average of 80 dollars (330 reais) per month in beauty salons. Half of that amount, however, can be saved without affecting appearance care. There are many examples of treatments and homemade tips for skin care, nails, hair, etc. Many girls, for example, claim that it is completely possible (and easy) to do hair removal at home with just sugar. To better understand the subject, some of our authors didn’t mind becoming “guinea pigs for a day” and sharing the results with you.

The authors of incredible.club decided to conduct an experiment: to carry out quite popular cosmetic procedures from beauty salons at home, and evaluate how effective and inexpensive they really are.

hair lamination

In the beauty salon, this procedure costs around 200 reais and takes about 2h to 2h30 to be performed. A special compound containing active substances and proteins is used together with a conditioner.

What to expect from the procedure: reconstruction, restoration and protection of damaged wires. First, the head must be washed with shampoo for deep cleaning. Then a mask is applied to the hair for 20-30 minutes. Afterwards, you should wrap your hair in aluminum foil and heat it up with steam from an iron or a regular hair dryer. The effect lasts approximately 3 to 6 weeks. For homemade recipes, the professional product is replaced with gelatin.

Homemade laminating mask is very simple: mix 3 tablespoons of gelatin, 9 tablespoons of water and 3 tablespoons of your favorite conditioner. Apply the mixture to wet hair, cover your head with a plastic bag and then place a towel on top. Let it rest for 35 minutes, then rinse well.

Result: the hair really became softer, shiny, but I didn’t notice any extraordinary effect. A negative point: even after rinsing, small pieces of gelatin remained on my head, which did not come off easily.

I spent 20 reais with the procedure at home, thus saving 180 reais.

anti-cellulite massage

In the salon, a massage session costs an average of 60 reais and lasts about 1 hour and 30 minutes to be performed. Both common pots and specific lymphatic drainage materials are used.

What to expect from the procedure: Due to the vacuum created by the glass, plastic or silicone pots (or tubes) that cover a small area of the skin, there is an increase in blood flow to the tissues. Massage helps in the early stages of cellulite. It takes at least 10 sessions to achieve a good result.

Result: for me, the effect is visible only immediately after the procedure. After a few hours you can’t feel the same softness on your skin. I think it takes more time to get a better result.

I bought a set of draining pots, massage oil and did the massage according to the instructions on the pot packaging every day for 5 days. I spent about 12 reais on the ingredients. So I saved 48 reais. If we calculate the value of the 10 sessions needed, it would save approximately 500 reais.

Conclusion: I recommend it to everyone, except those who have health contraindications (varicose veins, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases).

Pedicure

In the salon, this procedure costs about 40 reais and takes 1 hour to be done. Pliers, sandpaper and various specific instruments are used.

What to expect from the procedure: treatment of feet and nails. In the salon, first the nail polish is removed, then the feet are placed in a special solution for cleaning and softening the cuticle. Then the specialist corrects the shape of the nails and cleans the skin on the soles of the feet, using different instruments: stones, files and special pedicure accessories. At the end of the procedure, the nails are painted with nail polish and the skin is massaged with some moisturizing oil or cream.

At home, I did the same as I would in the salon. I spent money just to buy a good nail polish, about 7 reais. Thus, I managed to save 33 reais.

Conclusion: I recommend it, if you don’t have specific problems with your feet or nails.

Manicure

The procedure in the salon costs approximately 30 reais and takes 1 hour to be done. Special scissors, sandpaper, enamels and other more elaborate instruments are used.

What to expect from the procedure: treatment of hands and nails. First, the old nail polish is removed, and then the nails are cut and filed according to the customer’s wishes. Hands are placed in warm water, and then the cuticle is removed. The nails are then polished and moisturized with oils or creams. The application of nail polish completes the process.

Result: the color turned out discreet and smooth, and my hands looked very well-groomed and beautiful in general.

At home, I did the same procedure as I would at the salon. I spent only on the nail polish — 5 reais. So I managed to save 25 reais.

paraffin for hands

In the beauty salon, a session of this procedure costs about 20 reais and lasts 1 hour to be performed. A special paraffin, oil and scrub product is used.

What to expect from the procedure: intensive hydration and skin softening. As a result of the hot paraffin, the hands gain a more youthful and illuminated appearance, in addition to the skin becoming more elastic. For the effect to be noticeable, it is necessary to do at least 5 sessions. The process itself is divided into 4 steps: peeling hands, hydration with oil, application of paraffin and use of gloves before washing for 40 minutes.

I needed the following: cosmetic paraffin, baking soda, sea salt, various oils, surgical gloves, 2 plastic bags, and vitamins A and E.

I did everything at home, step by step. First, I rubbed my hands with scrub while the paraffin melted. Then I applied the mixture of oils to clean hands and dipped each hand in melted liquid paraffin. Then I covered both hands with the plastic bags and put on the gloves. I spent a total of 25 reais on the products, which was enough for 5 sessions. So, my savings was 175 reais.

sugar depilation

In the salon, shaving the whole legs costs around 30-40 reais and takes around 1 hour to do. Warm wax (instead of sugar), baby powder, antiseptic products and strips of paper are normally used.

What to expect from the procedure: depilation with sugar paste. First, you need to clean the skin with chlorhexidine (or any other antiseptic) and apply baby powder right after. Afterwards, a layer of sugar paste must be applied (obtained by melting sugar in a pan with a little lemon), which can then be removed directly with your hands or with a strip of paper.

To do the test I needed: sugar, lemon, disposable diapers, antiseptic, talcum powder, strips of paper and a spatula.

Result: during the procedure, not all hairs were removed. Many hairs simply broke off, which made the process of removing them even more difficult, even with an epilator machine. I had a lot of work to make my skin smooth and soft, so I think it’s better to go to the salon to get waxed.

Sugar waxing is a more cost-effective alternative that can actually be done at home, but it took me about an hour and a half to complete, following all the instructions. I spent almost 50 reais buying the materials, so it was even more expensive than I would have paid at the salon.

Conclusion: I do not recommend.
