Vitamin D increases testosterone levels

The symptoms of low testosterone levels in men can vary. Of course, decreased libido and erectile dysfunction are part of it. However, psychological peculiarities such as unfounded fears and irritability may also be present.

If beard growth slows and muscle strength goes down, a drop in testosterone levels is a very likely cause.

The testosterone level does not drop by chance, but only under certain conditions. One of these conditions could be a vitamin D deficiency, which is known to be widespread in our part of the world. In Spain, this deficiency is suffered by between 40 and 97% of people (incidence increases with age).

Vitamin D is necessary along with zinc, magnesium, and the B vitamins for the formation of testosterone. Additionally, vitamin D is involved in regulating testosterone levels by inhibiting aromatase, an enzyme that initiates the conversion of testosterone to estrogen and can therefore lower its levels.

Taking vitamin D increases testosterone levels

An article published by researchers at the Medical University of Graz in the journal Hormone and Metabolic Research shows the relationship between testosterone levels in men and those of vitamin D, a nutrient that is especially concentrated in the male reproductive organs.

Testosterone levels of 54 healthy but overweight men (20-49 years of age) were determined. The value was at the lower limit and his vitamin D levels were also low (around 20 ng/ml, when optimal levels are 40 to 60 ng/ml).

Participants were given either a 3,000 IU dose of vitamin D or a placebo for one year. time elapsed, the vitamin D value in the group taking the vitamin doubled, and the testosterone level also increased.

To achieve optimal levels of vitamin D you can take a supplement, but you can also increase the time of skin exposure to the sun, especially during the fall and winter. You can, for example, expose your face and arms to the sun for 20-30 minutes while resting in a park.

The higher the level of vitamin D, the higher the level of testosterone

Another study on vitamin D and testosterone levels confirmed that testosterone levels correlate with vitamin D levels. The higher and healthier the vitamin D level, the higher and healthier the test subjects’ testosterone levels. In this study, the participants were older, ranging in age from 65 to 89 years.

Of course, vitamin D deficiency is not the only cause of low testosterone levels, so taking vitamin D should only be one component of a holistic testosterone-boosting treatment.

Measure testosterone levels

Before taking measures to increase the testosterone level, it should first be checked whether the existing symptoms are really the result of too low a testosterone level or whether they have other causes. The doctor can help with a determination of testosterone in the blood. Testing can also be done at many pharmacies with a finger prick. Another option is to purchase a kit to take a saliva sample yourself, which is sent to a laboratory.
