What fuels courage?

What fueled your courage? Faith. Courage is an act of faith, because the courageous person acts in accordance with what he or she believes to be right, despite the threat of real or perceived danger.

It is not necessary to believe in the triune God to act courageously. History is full of stories of great acts of courage committed by people of other religions or without religious faith. Their action was still fueled by some kind of faith, because they believed it would result in a greater good or, at least, for the sake of conscience and reputation, would represent a higher moral good than capitulating to the fearful alternative.

However, from God’s perspective, “everything that does not proceed from faith [nele, o verdadeiro Deus que existe] it is sin” (Romans 14:23). This is the difference between the faith that fueled the courageous acts of biblical saints and the faith that fueled the courageous acts of unbelievers: in whom they placed their faith. Faith that is not ultimately rooted in ultimate reality is not ultimately good faith. Ultimately, it is a false faith that unconsciously ignores or consciously rejects the God who exists (Exodus 3:14). Therefore, courage that is not fueled by faith in what is ultimately real is not ultimately good courage.

For example, He said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me” (John 14:1).
