According to a survey by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at USP, about 45% of households have at least one dog and just over 17% have a cat. Among those who don’t have any pets, 100% say they want to, but point out lack of space or financial conditions. This study shows that everyone loves pets and, in this wave, some companies have been concerned about providing their employees with what they call “Pet Day”, or the day to take your pet to spend a day at work.

As research has shown, people love pets and, in the face of this trend, companies have been thinking about how to please or encourage people in the workplace. Some employers have already joined the “Day of informal clothing”, the “Day to take the children to work” and the current trend is to take their “furry children” to see their workplace.

The company MSD Saúde Animal, which works in the veterinary pharmaceutical sector, for example, has been playing this game for over 2 years. The company sells medicines for animals and HR decided to create this special day, in which pet owners register their guests in advance through e-mails, so that the day is just fun and joy.

Although it is not so common in Brazil to take pets every day, many entrepreneurs are accompanied daily by their pets and they end up becoming a company mascot. This is what the owner of Marmoraria Heitália does in Rio de Janeiro, who takes her border collie Louis almost every day and he has become a sensation in the workplace.

In other countries, not only Pet Day is quite common, but there are also companies where employees can take their pets to work daily. Google was one of those who joined the ‘dog-friendly’ climate. For this, it has an extensive list of etiquette rules for tutors to follow, so that everything can go well regarding the coexistence between pets, their owners and other employees.

The benefits of owning a pet are already proven in hospitals and nursing homes around the world, and companies are no different. Studies show that the company of an animal can help reduce workplace stress and increase employee productivity.
