A Brief History of Roses

Roses have an extremely long history, with fossil evidence proving their existence over 35 million years ago. The cultivation of roses is said to have started in China around 5000 years ago, although this type of rose did not make its way to Europe until the late 18th century. The cultivated roses of China were prized for their ability to flower repeatedly each year, and these cultivations eventually formed the basis for most of the roses we see today after being bred with hardy native roses.

Roses, uncultivated or cultivated, have been adopted worldwide as a symbol of opulence and beauty. Cleopatra loved to roam around her rooms with Marc Anthony so that whenever he smelled a rose he would think of her. Roses were grown extensively in the Middle East as well as the Roman Empire, where the nobility established large public rose gardens as symbols of their wealth. The rose was so important to the Romans that placing a wild rose at the door of a room meant that anything discussed in that room should be kept confidential.

Interestingly, the rose has not always been associated with beauty and love. During the 15th century, a white and red rose were the symbols of opposing English factions, leading to the “War of the Roses” when both sides fought for control of England.

By the 17th century, roses were considered such a valuable commodity that roses and rosewater were considered legal tender and could be exchanged for other goods or payments.

How to Make Magical Rose Water the magical properties of roses before they wither. I like to have some rose water on hand at home along with dried rose petals. A spray bottle of rose water is a great way to inject a little self-love throughout the day, and you can also use it in most love spells if you don’t have dried rose petals on hand.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh rose petals (or ½ cup dried)
  • 3 cups of water

method

“Roses give me your magical powers, fill this water with your loving vibrations. That’s how it should be”

  • Put a lid on your pot and bring it to a boil
  • Let it simmer until the color has oozed out of the rose petals. This can take between 5 and 20 minutes.
  • Leave the lid on and let the rosewater collapse completely.
  • When completely cold, strain your rose petals through a very fine sieve or through cheesecloth.
  • In a spray bottle in the fridge for a few weeks or out of the fridge for a week. If you don’t use that much, a sneaky tip is to freeze it in ice cubes and then use it when you need it. This looks pretty too and provided you used food grade rose petals you can even add the ice cubes to drinks.
