Choosing the progressive brush that best suits your hair type may seem simple, but you need to pay attention to some details, such as, for example, the amount of formaldehyde. Keep reading to find out more!

According to the Ministry of Health, hair care products are allowed to contain up to 0.2% formaldehyde as a preservative in their formula. However, according to Law No. 6,437, of August 20, 1977, any addition of formaldehyde to ready-made products is prohibited.

The Ministry of Health’s justification is that formaldehyde can cause irritation to the scalp, eyes and even the respiratory tract. It is worth remembering that, in order to have an enlistment effect, the concentration of formaldehyde should be much higher, which is prohibited by Brazilian legislation.

Progressive brush treatment is usually done by women who have wavy, curly or curly hair. This is because this procedure aims to leave the hair aligned, control frizz and volume, in addition to providing a healthy appearance.

For those who don’t know, progressive is a chemical procedure that gradually straightens the strands, providing easy to comb and aligned hair. So it’s always good to know your hair type and what it really needs to get the result you want.

As we already know, the progressive brush is a chemical procedure that changes the structure of the hair. Therefore, it is important to know if, in the product formula, there are components that can help in the health of the hair.

Of course, the type of progressive (Moroccan, American, Indian, strawberry, chocolate, intelligent and definitive) must be chosen according to the type of hair. But it is important to check which assets the product you are going to use contains. Try to choose those that have keratin and moisturizing components.

There are three actives used in the hair straightening and relaxation processes. Each of them is suitable for different hair types. Sodium hydroxide, for example, is indicated for thick and resistant hair, as it produces an intense and permanent smoothing, because it changes the shape of the hair.

Ammonium thioglycolate is more suitable for wavy hair, with open curls. It also permanently smooths until new hair grows. This asset can cause skin irritation and damage the wires if not used correctly.

Guanidine hydroxide, in turn, is recommended for medium or fine curly hair and can be used both for smoothing and relaxing, providing a result with a permanent effect.

After the prohibition of formaldehyde as a smoothing active, acid-based progressive brushes or acid-based progressives have been gaining strength. But, despite being less aggressive than formaldehyde and being compatible with all hair types, the acid base can also harm the strands.

According to experts, the acid base reduces the pH of the hair to 2.0 or 1.5. The normal pH of healthy hair should be between 4.5 and 5.5. What happens in the medium and long term is the weakening of the wires, which become thinner and thinner. This is because the acid base waterproofs the wires, which inhibits the absorption of nutrients.

The alkaline-based progressives are mainly indicated for chemically-free hair. However, with some care and professionalism, some chemical treatments are compatible with alkaline progressive, based on sodium hydroxide, ammonium thioglycolate or guanidine.

The fact is that these substances can raise the pH of the hair to 12 or 13. This process leaves the capillary cuticle very open and can generate excessive porosity (SCAB HAIR) of the hair. Dry, brittle and very damaged hair should avoid this type of progressive.

Although Brazilian legislation does not prohibit the testing of cosmetics and hygiene and beauty products on animals, this practice is prohibited in some states, such as Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. This is a consequence of the new demands of consumers, who have increasingly opted for vegan and Cruelty Free brands.

The Cruelty Free seal is given by PETA —…
