Sometimes it can happen that zippers break or get stuck.

In this article we explain simple and practical tricks to repair a broken zipper without having to replace it and without resorting to a tailor.

Finding yourself with a stuck zipper is the most common case and there are some practical tricks to make it work perfectly.

Cursor stuck in fabric

The zipper may become stuck due to a flap of fabric caught in the slider. Equipped with tweezers, grab the fabric and gently pull it away from the slider.

How to lubricate the zipper

If we find a zipper completely stuck that does not give way, we can use a lubricant, such as the graphite of a pencil, which is an excellent unblocker. Just slide the tip of the pencil a few times along the zipper, at the point where the slider gets stuck. Slide the zipper up and down until it slides perfectly.

If we come across a zipper that keeps opening, there is a simple way to repair it.

Open the zipper all the way and look carefully to see if there are any crooked teeth. If so, equip yourself with some pliers and straighten out the dent, being careful not to break it.

Separate hinges

If you close the hinge and notice that the two sides under the slide open, it is because the slide has loosened and is putting little pressure on the teeth. Simply squeeze it gently on both sides with a nutcracker or pliers.

How to replace the slider

Equip yourself with the same slider and retainer as the ones you need to replace. Use pliers to pry up the latch at the end of the hinge. Proceed to slide the slider between the two rows of teeth and up to the engagement. Crush the slider with the pliers and slide it up and down to check that it works properly.
