The word Dora comes from the title of an 1882 play by playwright Victorien Sardou, Fédora, written for Sarah Bernhardt. The play was first performed in the United States in 1889. Bernhardt played Princess Fédora, the heroine of the play. During the play, Bernhardt wore a hat with soft brims that creased in the center.
The hat was fashionable for women and the women’s rights movement adopted it as a symbol. After Britain’s Prince Edward began wearing them in 1924, they became popular among men for their elegance and ability to protect the wearer’s head from wind and weather.
The height of the Fedora’s popularity was the mid-1920s, which is why it is often associated with Prohibition and gangsters. In the 1940s and 1950s, film noir further popularized fedora hats and their popularity lasted until the late 1950s when informal clothing became more widespread.
Casual and super fashionable, the accessory goes really well with different types and styles of looks, and returned to the top in the mid-70s and again in the 80s and 2000s, thanks to its style and practicality.
