Square in Astrology – Meanings and Influences

In an Astral Map, the planetary aspects reveal a lot about our nature, evidencing, mainly, the facilities and challenges that we encounter throughout life. THE square in astrology it is one of the major astrological aspects considered tense, but is it an entirely negative presence?

Find out all about the meaning of the square in Astrology, how it is formed and what it means in a birth chart!

What are astrological aspects?

In a birth chart, astrological aspects refer to the angles formed between the planets on the Astrological Wheel. An aspect is determined according to the degree of separation between two planets, that is, the distance between one and the other.

Each aspect has an exact degree of formation: while conjunction is formed when there is a distance of 0° between two planets, opposition occurs when this distance is 180°. However, the aspects also allow for variation, usually up to 10° plus or minus. For this reason, it is considered that the more exact the degree, the greater the force exerted by this aspect.

Major astrological aspects exert the greatest influence on a chart, and are divided into harmonious aspects and tense or challenging aspects. While the harmonious aspects may go unnoticed, the influence of the tense aspects is more easily felt, after all, we more easily perceive the difficulties and challenges faced.

The different types of aspects have different meanings depending on the relationship that the planets involved have. In addition, the signs in which the planets are positioned must also be taken into account. Aspects formed from the personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars and Venus, plus the Ascendant), for example, are felt much more strongly than aspects to other planets.

What is the Square in Astrology?

The square in Astrology is a larger aspect, which means that its effects are stronger and consequently more easily observed. In addition, it is considered a tense aspect, forming friction and conflicts between the themes and characteristics of the planets involved.

In this tense aspect, the two planets involved are 90° apart; the value is reached by dividing the astrological wheel by four: 360° / 4 = 90°. Also, the signs in which the planets are positioned share the same energy (fixed, mutable or cardinal).

The aspect also admits a tolerance of 10° plus or minus, that is, it can be formed when the distance varies between 80° and 100°. It is important to keep in mind, however, that the further away from the exact degree the square is, the weaker its influence.

Because it is a tense aspect, the square in Astrology conveys a competition between the planets involved: the energies of these planets are in constant conflict, never in dialogue.

The conflict and tension typical of the square in Astrology occur mainly due to the way in which the signs in which the planets involved deal with the same type of energy (fixed, mutable or cardinal) in very different ways.

How to harness the energy of the square in Astrology?

Despite being considered a tense aspect, the square in Astrology can be seen from a more positive perspective, as an opportunity for growth and evolution. For this, however, it takes effort and commitment to seek balance.

Thus, the challenge presented by the square in Astrology is to find a way to deal with the issues brought from each planet, even though the energies have conflicting and different goals, wants and needs.

By harnessing the energy of the square in Astrology, it is possible to see why it is one of the most propelling aspects of the chart, as it can be the force behind movements and changes.

The consequences of letting challenges presented by the square in Astrology not be faced are not positive: the feeling is that it is impossible to progress, being in a state of stagnation.

The attempt to prioritize only one of the influences of one of the planets of the square in Astrology, leaving the other energy aside, is futile and will not bring results. In addition to contributing to stagnation, at some point you will be forced to deal with both influences, regardless of your will.

How to locate the square in the Astral Chart?

Because it is a tense aspect, the square in Astrology is usually identified on the chart by a red line connecting two planets that form a 90° angle.

Looking at the table of astrological aspects, just look for the square symbol in Astrology: a red square. The symbol will connect two planets or stars, located on the vertical line and on the horizontal line.

In the map below, it is possible to identify a square formed between Sun in Sagittarius (vertical line) and Mars in Virgo (horizontal line). From this identification of the planets involved, it is possible to interpret the square in Astrology from its characteristics considered tense.
