Scapular what it is and how to use it | Discover this powerful jewel

Scapular is a delicate piece of jewelry that can be used on any occasion, demonstrating faith and physical and spiritual protection. Read the post and find out what is it and how to use it this very popular piece.

What is the meaning of the scapular?

The word derives from the Latin “scapula” and means shoulder or scapula, which refers precisely to the region in which it is used.

History of the scapular

The origin of scapular is linked to the Order of Carmelites, people who founded a church in honor of Our Lady on Mount Carmel, in Israel. This Order was nomadic and when they arrived in Europe, they faced resistance to the teachings they wanted to pass on and were even ridiculed for the way they dressed. At this time, the scapular was an apron placed over the shoulders, which monks wore to avoid staining their tunic during work.

Faced with these difficulties they encountered, Saint Simon Stock, leader of the Order and devotee of Mary, prayed and asked her for help against his enemies and it was then that he received a scapular from her with the promise that whoever wore it would be under her protection, saying: “Receive, beloved son, this scapular. Whoever dies with him will not suffer the destruction of eternal fire. It is a sign of salvation, defense in danger, a covenant of peace and an eternal pact with God.”.

After that, they made a miniature of the scapular used by monks, for lay people to use as well. This adaptation had two squares of fabric connected by a string.

How to use the scapular?

According to tradition, the scapular should not be removed from the body. Therefore, using the scapular, which is a piece of jewelry, there will be no risk of it getting damaged and you can always use it, as long as you take care of its maintenance.

As for the order of the pendants, it makes no difference, but generally the Sacred Heart of Jesus faces backwards and Our Lady of Mount Carmel faces forwards.

Why do you wear a scapular?

The scapular is used to signal what is within you, your purposes, your involvement with the teachings and life of Jesus and, above all, it is a sign of alliance and devotion to Mary.

Just as Our Lady said to Simon Stock, Pope John XXII stated that whoever dies wearing one will be freed from purgatory.

Does the Scapular need to be earned?

Traditionally they say that the scapular must be given to someone or given by a priest. However, if you don’t want to wait for this gift to arrive, you can gift yourself and also give it as a gift to other people, demonstrating the affection and care you have for them. It is ideal for it to be blessed by a priest, as is every religious jewelry.
