Research by Brazilian scientists who, coincidentally (or not) have already become a topic on Grey’s Anatomy

Grey’s Anatomy has already broken records and snatched the spot for the longest-running medical drama in American TV history. Currently, in its sixteenth season, the series has already left its fans on edge many times, either with its comic moments, with its romances or with the departure of outstanding characters and in the approach to delicate subjects.

The truth is gray’s has already left its mark on the list of the most important series of all time. And as if all that wasn’t enough, inventions and research by Brazilian scientists have already been covered in the series.

It’s the awesome.club was to know a little more about each one of them. Check out!

The pen that detects cancer and that appears in the fourteenth season as an idea by Richard Webber is, in fact, the creation of Brazilian scientist Lívia Schiavinato Eberlin

The young Brazilian scientist, who along with her team developed a pen capable of detecting cancer during surgery, has a degree in chemistry from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and is currently head of the laboratory at the University of Texas, United States.

The pen, called the MasSpec Pen, has already been tested on 800 samples and achieved an overall accuracy of 96.3% in the tests, which is very promising. Due to the great invention and the positive results, Lívia Schiavinato Eberlin received the important scholarship from the MacArthur Foundation, popularly called “the scholarship of geniuses” and took the sum of 625,000 dollars to use as she wishes. In addition, the pen recently gained approval from US agencies to be tested on humans during surgery.

But how does the MasSpec Pen, the pen that detects cancer, work and why is it so important?

The scientist’s intention is for the pen to be able to ensure that all tumor tissue was removed from the patient during surgery, as in many cases it is not possible to identify with the naked eye where the cancerous lesion ends and where the healthy tissue begins. And, with the pen, it is possible to discover this in just 3 seconds, which reduces the time in which the patient is exposed to the risks of surgery (waiting for the pathological analysis), making everything faster and safer.

All this is possible thanks to the technology used: through a chemical analysis technique, the pen (which has a water reservoir), when in contact with the tissue, sends small droplets of water with dissolved molecules that are analyzed by the spectrometer mass. Then, the cells are classified as cancerous or not.

The identification of malignant or non-malignant cells can be performed due to the artificial intelligence technology used, in which the machine is taught to recognize the particularities of cancerous samples and, subsequently, classify them. So far, the pen has been tested for brain, lung, thyroid, pancreatic, ovarian and breast cancer.

doctor Avery shows the use and benefits of Tilapia skin for the treatment of burns, and this is the result of a Brazilian research

The technique helps to reduce costs during treatment and also reduces risks to the patient. Tilapia skin can be used in the treatment of 2nd degree (deep) and 3rd degree burns, and is considered a biological dressing (it can be kept for days, without the need to change it), since the animal’s skin is very similar to human hair. Therefore, it can be used as a temporary dressing to help close wounds, contributing to lower chances of contamination and protein loss.

The technique has been studied and used in several countries, but here it has already been used to help treat victims of a tragedy at a day care center in Minas Gerais, and also as an alternative for reconstructing the vaginal canal in cases of gynecological problems.

It is really very exciting when art imitates life (or does life imitate art?), whatever… The fact is that it is very hopeful to see Brazilians creating incredible things that can really transform the lives of many people and gaining worldwide recognition. therefore.

So what do you think of these inventions? Have you ever imagined that they really existed in real life?
