This orixá is always present in the heart and in the place where the prayer is being said.

Its presence is very strong in environments that contemplate nature. Therefore, it is the orisha that represents hunting, conquest and prosperity. There are several strengths of Oxossi and, in this article, they will be addressed, as well as prayers and their history. Check it out now!

Oxossi is the great lord of the woods, skillful hunter, warrior and very wise. Odé, as he is also known, passes through the leaves on the ground and leaves no footprints, and his arrow is quick and accurate. Within the forests, Oxóssi is the king and is worshiped by several religions, including Umbanda and Candomblé.

The cult of Oxossi is different in each of the religions. Candomblé aims to keep the cult that was done to the Orixás in Africa almost intact. In umbanda, they are worshiped as natural energies and God’s factors. Check out more details about Oxossi below!

Like the entire pantheon of Orixás, Oxóssi came from Africa and his name is derived from Osowusi, which means popular guardian. He was worshiped in the Ketu region of Benin and was one of the oldest Yoruba capitals. Keto is also considered one of the seven original kingdoms established by the sons of Odudua.

During the diaspora, his cult was almost extinguished by the death of his priests, but some survivors managed to maintain their tradition in Brazil and Cuba. In candomblé, he is considered the king of the Keto nation and, in umbanda, he is regent of the Caboclos line, one of the 3 main support lines of the right.

Yoruba mythology aims to pass on knowledge and a message through tales called Itã. The cult of the Orishas dates back to more than 2,000 BC and, at that time, the best way to transmit knowledge and preserve it was through the Itãs, which are still told today, from generation to generation.

Check out, below, the Itã of the Bird of Witches:

Every year, to commemorate the yam harvest, the king of Ife held a feast to celebrate with his subjects. The festivities proceeded normally, until a giant bird landed on top of the castle, causing panic to all participants. The animal had been sent by the Ia Mi Oxorongá, witch mothers who felt offended at not being invited.

Thus, the king called all the hunters in the kingdom to take care of that bird, and his call was answered by the 3 best in the entire kingdom. From Idô came Oxotogum, with 20 arrows; from Morê, came Oxotogi, with 40 arrows, and from Ilarê, came Oxotadotá, with his 50 arrows. But all of them were in vain, as the 3 didn’t hit a single arrow on that bird.

Then, a young hunter named Oxotocanxoxô appeared and accepted the mission to get rid of the animal. He only had an arrow in his hand, with no chance to miss. His mother, when she found out that her son was in that situation, went to the witches and made an offering. Then, the young hunter’s single arrow hit that giant bird.

The king was extremely pleased and gave him many honors, as well as half of all the riches in the kingdom. The people had a great party, in which everyone honored and sang for his courage. Thus, Oxotocanxoxô came to be called Osowusi, “the popular guardian”. After that, Osowusi continued to protect and guard that kingdom with his holy arrows.

The archetype of Oxossi is the great hunter. Strong and cunning, he carries a bow and arrow in his hand and wears his vestments of feathers and feathers. He is always barefoot, as there is no hard ground for him, and he walks over the leaves without leaving any marks. So his enemies don’t see him coming, and he protects forests and their animals from predators of nature.

Oxossi represents strength, determination, focus and protective, hunting and caring instincts. The Orixá awakens in us the discomfort with the sameness and, like a hunter, invites us to move, to find the best angle, terrain and place for hunting. He brings the desire for greatness and humility, because he is a king, but also a hunter.

In contrast, he also carries the energy of divine wisdom, which points out the right moments to stop and wait, to silence the mind of all external turbulence and to think objectively and clearly. Also, it brings protection to your village and your loved ones.

The syncretism of Oxossi in Brazil changes depending on the region of Brazil where you are. In Bahia and in some other states, he is seen in the figure of São Jorge. Already in Rio de Janeiro, it is seen in the figure of São Sebastião.

Thus, this difference is due to the duality of warrior and hunter, which polarizes along with Ogun, too.

The Orisha Oxossi is in the green, in the virgin forest and in nature. Connecting with this force is not difficult, so through offerings and meditations on your natural power point, it is possible to please it.

Remember he is lord of the woods. Vibrating the energy of preservation is crucial, so avoid discarding waste in the woods or offerings with materials that are not biodegradable.
