Planet Saturn – Characteristics and curiosities! – Map of My Heaven

The planet Saturn is the second largest in the solar system, second only to its neighbor Jupiter. Its system of rings and moons draws a lot of attention, as do some other characteristics it has.

The sixth planet closest to the Sun has been known since ancient times and its rings can be seen even here on Earth!

Find out everything about Saturn: whether in astronomy, astrology or mythology.

What is the planet Saturn like?

Like Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune, the planet Saturn is one of the gaseous planets, basically composed of hydrogen (97%), as well as other gases such as helium and methane.

Its core is rock, ice and water. Probably, because it is more than 1.427 billion km from the Sun, Saturn does not receive as much heat from the star and remains at a very cold temperature.

Saturn’s average temperature is -125°C, with its composition being less dense than that of water. Therefore, if we could place the gas giant in a huge basin of water, it would float. Funny, right?

Despite this, its volume is about 755 times greater than that of our planet! And its diameter is 120,536 km, that is: about 9.4 times the Earth’s diameter.

What captures our attention right away, too, are her various rings.

What are Saturn’s rings?

Saturn’s rings are part of seven main groups: A, B, C, D, E, F and G.

The main theory is that asteroids collided with the planet or its moons, releasing particles that began gravitational movement around Saturn.

The rings are shaped by ice, rock and dust and there are calculations that indicate that the diameter of the ring system reaches up to around 280 thousand km in some regions – however the thickness of each one would not exceed the average of 1 km.

Although Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune also have rings, only Saturn’s are visible from Earth.

How many hours is a day on Saturn?

The star’s rotational movement is 10 hours and 39 minutes, making it the second fastest in the solar system, right after the planet Jupiter.

Due to this factor, its shape is also flatter at the poles, which are smaller in relation to their equatorial area.

How long is a year on Saturn?

You certainly wouldn’t want to live on Saturn, because while here the year lasts 365 days, on the planet it takes 29 years, 167 days and 6 hours to go around the Sun completely and make its translational movement!

How many moons does Saturn have?

Currently, the planet Saturn holds the title of planet with the largest number of moons in the solar system.

There are 82 natural satellites orbiting around it, 3 more than those known on Jupiter.

The most famous is Titan, the second largest in the solar system – second only to Ganymede, from Jupiter. In fact, it is even bigger than the planet Mercury.

Planet Saturn in Astrology

In the field of astrology, the planet Saturn also rules a sign of the Zodiac and exerts influences on us with its transits.

The star is closely linked to what limits us, but at the same time it brings us a lot of learning. He is a ruler linked to discipline, prudence and maturity.

Furthermore, it is associated with the 10th house, linked to career and our place in society.

As for the sign, it rules Capricorn, a sign that is very focused on reasoning, determination and ambition. You can check the personality of the signs in the article we wrote specifically about this. ?

Therefore, the position of Saturn in your birth chart indicates the search for excellence in that particular area. This is where you will feel most compelled to overcome limitations and perhaps this will bring you some internal conflict.

Furthermore, there is also a lot of talk about the so-called “Saturn Return”. Since the planet Saturn takes an average of 30 years to go around the Sun completely, when we are this age we have a great impact caused by the star.

While marking our limits, it is a period of discovery, dealing with our fears and conflicts and evolving. It’s almost a ritualistic passage from an astrological point of view, when we stop being children and become adults – full of responsibilities and demands.

In this aspect, we are often energetically encouraged to disconnect from habits, people and beliefs that no longer suit us.

Although this can be painful, it is also something that is part of our own evolution, so it is necessary to search for a clearer path.

Planet Saturn in Mythology

The planet Saturn is a Roman god, who in Greek mythology is equivalent to Cronos, the son of Heaven (Uranus) and Earth (Gaia).

He represents time and its often cruel passage. Cronos takes the place of his father, who is overcome by confusion, but soon after learns of a prophecy that said the same would happen to him.

Afraid of fate, after marrying Rhea (a titanoid also daughter of Uranus and Gaia), he begins to devour his children to avoid being deposed.

This fact is very curious, as it makes a difference with time itself, which consumes everything without mercy or delay to fulfill its own function.

However, one day the prophecy is fulfilled and Zeus (who until then had been hidden by his mother) gives him a potion to make him vomit all his previously swallowed children.

A great fight ensues, and Zeus finally takes his place.

There are some versions that indicate that he was taken prisoner for a while, later reappearing and establishing a period of peace and teaching men about Agriculture.

It’s nice to think that the same thing happens in our lives: at first we are reckless and impulsive, while over the years we become wiser, more experienced and patient.

Therefore, we are truly like planting, which over time evolves and bears productive fruit.
