What would peace be? If we were to define it in other words, we could use: peace, tranquility, calm, harmony and happiness. That is, the lack of trouble, violence, wars, and the presence of love and prosperity. It is what makes people live well, not only socially, but also personally, that is, the famous inner peace. Why is September 21st the International Day of Peace?

In 1981, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) decreed September 21 as the International Day of Peace – a date declared as a day of ceasefire and without violence in the world, where all peoples will mark for the celebration of peace, in addition to be the day on which the UN opened the general meeting. Event that aims to encourage nations to feel motivated to make a difference on this day, in addition to establishing good relations between all humanity. After all, a pleasant coexistence in all aspects; political, personal, professional and family, among others, is essential. A harmonious environment is the key for everyone to have peace.

There is another idea behind this special date, the International Day of Peace is also intended to promote attitudes that encourage peace in the world, making people aware and understand how much they are needed. In other words, forgiving a friend, donating something you no longer use, helping those in need, putting a white flag on your house and much more.

World Day of Peace X International Day of Peace

The World Day of Peace cannot be confused with the International Day of Peace. Although they are dates around the same theme, their origins are mainly different. The World Day of Peace is celebrated on January 1 and was established by Pope Paul VI in 1967. As it is a celebration linked to the Catholic Church, the Vatican holds an official ceremony on the date every year. Also, there is always a special and different theme every year – chosen by the pope himself. In 2014 it was about fraternity, 2015 was about the fight against slave labor and in 2016 it was “Beat the difference and conquer peace”.

The International Day of Peace was established by the UN and celebrated on September 21 – by the General Assembly of the Organization in 1981.
