The birth (1st version)

Oxalá and Nanã, still suffering from the abandonment of Omulu, who is one of their children, had another son who was called Oxumaré. Due to a plague launched in Nanã, the son was born with several training problems, which made him look like a snake without arms or legs. In this way, he crawled on the ground as if he were a reptile, even though his form was human. Disappointed with her son, Nanã abandoned him.

Unlike Omulu, the Orisha did not have anyone’s help. Wise and very agile, he learned to survive on his own by swimming, hunting and climbing trees, despite his difficult anatomy. One day, the Orisha of the prophecy called Orunmilá saw Oxumaré and took pity on the boy. It was then that he made the boy become one of the most beautiful Orixás, giving him the responsibility of bringing rain to Xangô’s palace.

The birth (2nd version)

When Nanã became pregnant with Oxumaré, the Orisha Orunmilá told Nanã that she would not have to worry about her son, as he would be one of the most beautiful Orixás. In fact, by saying this, Orunmila launched a punishment on Nanã for having abandoned Omulu. The punishment was never being able to live close to Oxumaré, as he was very active and had no attachment to anyone.
