The mysterious, beautiful owl is a bird worth studying. It flies at night and has an uncanny ability to capture prey. But because these birds are nocturnal fliers, people have often feared them. Many societies and cultures associate them with darkness, negativity, and mystery, while others associate them with wisdom and prophecy.

What does it mean when you see or hear an owl?

Owl sightings and calls can be either a blessing or a bad omen. Notice what happens right after you see or hear the owl. When something good happens, sighting means good luck. When something negative happens, the sighting heralds bad news, including illness. The ancient Welsh people associated owls with fertility. When a pregnant woman heard the hoot of an owl, it was believed that she was about to go into easy labor. The ancient Greeks and Romans associated owls with the goddess Athena, wisdom and prophecy. The ancient Christians saw owls as a sign of evil and associated them with Lilith, Adam’s first disobedient wife.

Owls are most commonly seen and heard at night as they are nocturnal. However, some owls, such as the pygmy owl, are active at dusk. And if you see or hear an owl during the day, it means you are likely to encounter a diurnal owl that sleeps at night like us; two such owls are the burrowing owl and the short-eared owl.

Greek and Roman Owlology

Owls are birds of the night – in general. Because of this, they have been associated with the moon, the night, and even the feminine.

The ancient Greeks worshiped the goddess Athena, who was said to be the goddess of wisdom and guardian of the Acropolis. Her symbol was the owl, so the bird became a symbol of higher wisdom. The owl was a bird of prophecy and wisdom in many ancient cultures. The ancient Romans thought that an owl’s feather would help discover the mysteries of a sleeping human.

What do owls symbolize in Native American culture?

According to some Native American cultures, every human has an animal designation determined by the season in which you were born. In this tradition, the owl is the animal symbol for people born between November 23rd and December 21st.

Ted Andrews, the author of animal language, says that Native American groups have different views of the owl. While the Pawnee viewed the owl as a symbol of protection, the Ojibwa saw it as an omen of death or evil. He goes on to say that in Pueblo culture there was a god called Skeleton Man. He was a death god, but also a spirit of fertility. The owl was associated with this god.

In fact, you will find that different Native American cultures view the owl with negative, neutral, and positive associations. Some see the owl as one associated with evil spirits and evil people. Its presence can help a person develop negative psychic powers that they can use against others for selfish reasons.

Some people can even use these psychic powers to control others. We all know these “controlling” people. They might have an owl in their totem!

What does it mean to have an owl in your totem?

According to Native American tradition, people with an owl in their totem are also considered adaptable and carefree about life. They are often artistic and adventurous. Funny and flexible, sensitive and with a zest for life, these people can achieve great things. Conversely, they can get a bit self-absorbed and hold grudges.

Do you think you have an owl in your totem? Ask yourself if the owl has a special meaning for you. Are you particularly attracted to them or afraid of them? Do you see them more often than other people who live nearby? If so, then owls could be among your spirit guides.

Facts about owls you don’t know yet

Owls have large eyes to help navigate in total darkness. Their eyes are specially adapted to easily detect movement and detect changes in light levels.
They blink like humans, but also have a “third eyelid.” This third eyelid moves from side to side to clean and lubricate the eyes that cannot move. Instead of looking around by changing the direction of their gaze like we can, they have to use their entire head to move their entire head in the direction they want to look. While they cannot turn their heads 360°, they can turn their heads quite a wide range in search of a sound or object.
Your ears don’t sit evenly on your head. In fact, one is often noticeably larger than the other. This allows each ear to hear a different area and helps owls sort and identify sounds more easily.
There are over 100 species of owls and many live near human settlements. This is because rodents, which are an important part of owls’ diet, also make their home close to human activity.
Some owl species are endangered. This is because they are experiencing habitat loss. Humans also hunt and kill them under the mistaken belief that they are “pests.” However, the hunting ability of owls actually helps to eradicate rodents. Barn owls can catch ten times as many rodents as a cat in a single night. And owls that feed young owls can catch significantly more. Owls definitely have a place and an important role in the ecosystem.

Nesting Habits of Owls

Owls have mating habits similar to other birds. They generally live alone but will seek out each other when it is time to breed. The female will only mate with a male she really trusts.
Barn owls form a lifelong bond with a mate. Other owls stay together long enough to see the owls leave the “nest.”
Owls don’t build their own nests. They find other birds’ nests or other safe havens like forks in trees.
Males are usually tasked with chasing prey for their young. Generally, the female stays with the eggs and owls while the male hunts for food and brings it back. An owl that helps feed young will kill dozens of mice, rodents, and other prey in just one night. Talk about efficient predators!

Why are owls so quiet?

Owls can fly in complete silence, catching and eating their prey before the prey has any idea what happened. This silent flight is made possible by their soft and fringed wings and the fact that their wings are quite large in relation to their body.

Once an owl has caught its prey, it swallows it upside down and whole. The owl’s body digests and uses everything but the bones, fur, and teeth of the prey. The owl then disposes of the unusable parts as pellets.

I’ve had people up the hill from me outlining trees and renovating house and yard there they might disturb a nest and I have bird feeders in front of my house. We moved into an apartment in California. For almost a month, an owl stood on a balcony most of the time. That was small. It came during the day. I didn’t see anything at night.

And then after 5 years we bought a house and moved. There also the same owl, but this time it was big enough. I’ve never seen an owl that big. It came during the day every day for almost a month. We had a very good life.

We later moved to a family home. No sign of owl. The problem started with us. It was a bad sign in our culture if we saw an owl or heard an owl sound…
