Find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted. If you like, you can light a candle and/or incense to help with the spiritual connection. Sit comfortably and take deep breaths until you notice relaxation in your body and mind. Look at or hold an image of the saint and say the opening prayer, accompanied by an Our Father, a Hail Mary and a Glory Be. Then, it’s time for meditation for the specific day (there are nine). Complete with the greeting, the Creed and the litany. The texts of novena of Saint Philomena are below:

Saint Philomena’s opening prayer

Oh! glorious Virgin and Martyr Saint Philomena, who from Heaven where you reign, you take pleasure in bringing countless benefits to Earth, here I am prostrated at your feet to beg you for help for my needs that afflict me so much, you who are so powerful next to Jesus, as proven by the innumerable wonders that take place wherever you are invoked and honored.

I rejoice to see you so great, so pure, so holy, so gloriously rewarded in heaven and on earth. Attracted by your examples to the practice of solid virtues and full of hope in view of the rewards granted to your merits, I propose to imitate you by escaping from sin and by perfectly fulfilling the Lord’s commandments.

So help me, oh! Great and powerful Saint, in this distressing hour in which I find myself, grace reaches me (say what you want) and above all an inviolable purity, a strength capable of resisting all temptations, a generosity that does not refuse God any sacrifice and a love as strong as death for faith in Jesus Christ, a great devotion and love for the Most Holy Mary and the Holy Father, and also the grace to live faith holyly so that one day I can be with you in heaven for all eternity.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary and 1 Glory Be.

Meditation for the First Day

1- Consider that Saint Philomena was a virgin.
Virgin in the middle of the world…
Virgin despite the persecution…
Virgin until death… What a model!
Can I contemplate it without confusion?…
What will be the medicine?…
2- Humble yourselves many times for what confused you, considering your virginal purity.
3- Attend the Holy Mass in his honor and visit an image of him, if it is easy for you.

Meditation for the Second Day

1- Consider that Saint Philomena was and did not stop being a virgin…
Because he knew how to mortify the corrupt desires of the flesh…, to preserve, in the use of the senses, the modesty of Jesus Christ…, to keep away from a deceiving world and dangerous occasions…
Did you imitate her in all this?
What are the sources of your temptations… of your weaknesses… of your concerns… of your falls… Try to analyze them.
2- Flee from what caused you harm, practice what you had the misfortune to neglect regarding chastity.

Meditation for the Third Day

1- Consider that Saint Philomena preserved and increased the love for Virginity with prayer, an abundant source of supernatural life… with the Sacraments, through which the soul is carried in the Blood of Jesus Christ and nourished with the Sacred Body, divine germ of virginity Christian… with the remembrance that its members were the members of the Body of Jesus Christ and that its body was the temple of the Holy Spirit…
Don’t you perhaps have the same means?…
What use do you make of them?…
2- Redouble your fervor in all your prayers…
Say to yourselves from time to time: my members are those of Jesus Christ…
the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Meditation for the Fourth Day

1- Consider that Saint Philomena was a Martyr…
who had to suffer…
suffer a lot…
Suffering until death, and who showed in those torments an insurmountable Patience…
Suffering and patience are inextricably linked in you…
You often have to suffer…
to suffer a little…
never die as a result.
Where does so much weakness come from?…
Maybe you don’t want to give him medicine?…
What means do you choose, therefore?
2- Suffer with patience the few pains, setbacks and pains that the Lord pleases to send us on this day. To obtain a difficult grace it is necessary to be in a state of grace through a well-made confession to the priest and, if possible, commune for nine days in honor of Saint Philomena. Another effective means is wakefulness.

Meditation for the Fifth Day

1- Consider that Saint Philomena suffered martyrdom for Jesus Christ…
They wanted to take away her faith… they wanted to make her violate the vows of her Baptism… to induce her to follow the examples of idolaters or apostates.
And what do the devil, the world, the flesh and your own heart desire from you, on so many occasions, if not similar infidelities?…
These are reduced to insulting God…
Isn’t it perhaps vain fears that now make you fail in your duties and betray your faith?…
Oh! God, what shameful lukewarmness!
Finally regain your courage.
2- I gained some human respect…
Say to yourselves from time to time:
It is better to please God than men.

Meditation for the Sixth Day

1- Consider that Saint Philomena, dying for Jesus Christ, had to put into practice this maxim of the Savior:
“He who loves the Father, the mother, the Son or the daughter and his own life more than Me, is not worthy of Me” (Mt 10,38-39)…
She didn’t hesitate…
He sacrificed everything, although blood and nature raised their voice; On less difficult occasions, would we show ourselves worthy of Christ?
If a choice ever appears to us between God and creatures, between grace and nature, between the love of God and the affections for creatures, to whom will we give preference?…
Oh, let us no longer descend from our dignity as Children of God and disciples of Jesus Christ in the future.
2- Let us strive on this day to please only God or creatures only through God.

Meditation for the Seventh Day

1- Consider that Saint Philomena, dying for Jesus Christ, had to tolerate the mockery, sarcasm, outrages of her persecutors, her executioners and most of the spectators of her torture…
She was no less generous, less constant, less joyful in the public confession of her faith…
If the world makes you drink from such a cup, will you have enough courage to swallow its bitterness with the same feelings?
Oh! What do their mockery, their contempt, their most unjust and bloodthirsty persecutions matter?…
Can he ever be dishonored who is honored by God? Do not be afraid… Follow your path…
He will end up in possession of eternal glory.
2- Do not let your heart be disturbed if someone says something rude, rude, cutting, offensive, etc. to you.

Meditation for the Eighth Day

1- Consider that Saint Philomena, dying for the love of Jesus Christ for all things in this abject world, entered into the joy of eternal life.
Yes, I am certain, she said in her heart, that the Supreme Judge will grant me, in exchange for the passing goods that I sacrifice for His love, the crown of justice that He promised me.
She dies… and there she is in the tabernacle of God, with the Saints following the Lamb… Are these the thoughts I try to have when I find myself faced with some sacrifice?…
What impression do sacrifices make on my soul?
Which way do they tip the scales?… Ah! the Saints to possess everything, they said everything, they lost everything… and what shall I say?
2-Let us make some voluntary sacrifice on this day… Let us do it promptly and willingly to those who are united with our duties, etc.

Meditation for the Ninth Day

1- Consider that Saint Philomena, after having sacrificed everything in this miserable world for the love of Jesus Christ, received from Him, even in this world, more than a hundredfold of what she had given.
What a reputation!
How much power!
How much glory!
How much greatness humiliated at your feet!
What a large influx of pilgrims to its various sanctuaries!
How many parties in your honor!
What testimonies of veneration are given to him!
This is exactly how God fulfills his promises. Oh, if with equal fidelity we kept ours towards Him!…
But by depriving Him of His glory, will we not perhaps also deprive ourselves of so many merits and favors, whether in this world or the next?…
Therefore, courage.
Be faithful, so that God may be faithful with you.
2- Do some work of mercy today in honor of Saint Philomena. Prepare yourselves through a good confession to worthily receive Our Lord Jesus Christ.
