Natalie Portman’s Horrific Story of Harassment as a Child

the movements me too (Me too), Time’s Up (Time is up) and the struggle of a part of the population to eradicate violence against women are well-known issues. In recent years, these movements have taken shape and gained particular momentum in the television and film industry.

O awesome.club wants to tell the story of the terrible harassment that Natalie Portman had to face during her adolescence and how she ended up becoming one of the main spokespersons for the movement Time’s Up.

Natalie Portman’s success at age 13

With the denunciations made by many actresses, we ended up becoming aware of the torment and injustices faced every day by women on the big screen. One such woman is Israeli actress Natalie Portman, who has suffered the horrific sexualization of Hollywood girls.

It all started when Portman played the role of Matilda in Luc Bessón’s film, The professional. The film tells the story of a girl who befriends a hitman, intent on avenging her family’s lives.

However, at the same time that the character Matilda began to discover her femininity, her voice and her desires, Natalie herself (like most teenagers her age) was discovering these characteristics in herself.

sexual terrorism

Since its release in 1994, the film has received much acclaim, so letters from fans and followers have not been long in coming. The disappointment started right away when opening the first letter, in which a fan told the “sexual fantasy of raping her”. This is how Natalie first came into contact with sexual terrorism.

As if that weren’t enough, a local radio station motivated its listeners to count down to Natalie’s 18th birthday — when it would be legally permissible to have sex with her. “I felt the need to cover my body, inhibit my expressions and my work to send the message that I am a person worthy of respect,” explained the actress during a march in Los Angeles.

Objectification by film critics

The story does not end here. After the deplorable acts of harassment by mail, comments from alleged movie professionals came to light. Critics of the seventh art sexualized her interpretation, reducing her to comments like “she has incipient breasts”.

At just 13 years old, Natalie fell victim to the unpleasant sexual objectification of men and began to build a reputation as a conservative, serious and nerd — a found way to protect your body.

“I understood very quickly at the age of 13 that if I expressed myself sexually I would feel insecure and men would feel they had the right to objectify me. So I rejected all the roles that had kissing scenes, to highlight how serious it was. I cultivated a taste for elegant dress and a conservative reputation in an attempt to keep my body safe and make my voice heard,” explained Natalie.

Today we see her expanding her voice to be heard not only by her peers within the film industry, but also by all those fighting to end harassment and violence against women and girls around the world.

If you could go back in time, what message would you send Natalie Portman to help her fight the harassment she faced?
