The Origin of Nordic Runes

It is not known exactly where and how the Futhark alphabet originated. The origin of ancient Futhark runes is shrouded in mystery and guesswork. Even the word rune, in Saxon terms, means “mysterious whisper”. This is because it suggests the oral and sacred transmission of ancestral knowledge, a secret initiation into magic. Thus, despite being an alphabet, the Futhark runes are also a spiritual symbolic system, through which priests taught their secrets.

The meaning of Futhark runes is related to many Norse symbols and gods, but there are theories that there was intervention in the formation of the Futhark alphabet by isolated Latin, Greek and Roman peoples.

The Futhark Alphabet

The Ancient Futhark alphabet is made up of 24 runes and a 25th white rune, called the Wyrd. Its name derives from the first six runes that compose it: Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raidho and Kenaz. The runes are used to this day as an oracle, that is, a tool that gives answers and/or guidance about the future in various aspects.

This alphabet is divided into three sets of eight runes each, called Aettir, a word that means “family” or “tribe”. Each Aett brings together runes with similar meanings and is ruled by a pair of gods.

First Aett

Ruled by the fertility gods Frey and Freyja, this Aett is related to the material and qualities that must be acquired by the individual. This set represents the creation of order from chaos and the basic elements that compose it, such as fire and ice. The runes Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raidho, Kenaz, Gebo and Wunjo are part of this Aett.

According to Aett

The guardian gods responsible for this Aett are Heimdall and Mordgud, and this is the set that governs emotions, describing overcoming obstacles, the rewards of work, internal conflicts and the path to success. This Aett, which describes the forces that disorganize and destroy, but also open a new cycle, are the runes Hagalaz, Nauthiz, Isa, Jera, Eihwaz, Perth, Algiz and Sowilo.

Third Aett

The third and last Aett is focused on mental and spiritual issues, clarifying what the individual must improve to achieve enlightenment and self-sufficiency: it deals with the evolution of man. Ruled by Tyr and Ziza, this Aett is composed of the Tiwaz, Berkana, Ehwaz, Mannaz, Laguz, Inguz, Othala and Dagaz runes.
