MEANING OF CIRCUMCISION IN THE BIBLE

In a religious custom, the circumcision in the bible It was indispensable for all of Abraham’s successors as a token of the agreement God made with him (Genesis 17:9-14; Acts 7:8). Circumcision in the Bible

In relation to the first argument, New Testament Christians are no longer under the precepts of the Old Testament and circumcision is no longer requested. This is stated in a series of New Testament passages, among which are Acts 15; Galatians 2:1-3; 5:1-11; 6:11-16; 1 Corinthians 7:17-20; Colossians 2:8-12; Philippians 3:1-3.

As these passages reveal, the independence of our faults is the outcome of hope in Christ; It is Christ’s completed creation on the cross that he saves, not the acclamation of an external cult. Even the law considered circumcision alone incompetent to satisfy God, who imposed the obligation to “circumcise hearts” (Deuteronomy 10:16; cf. Romans 2:29). In salvation, the works of the flesh are of no avail (see Galatians 2:16).

In Acts 16:3, Paul had Timothy, a cooperating preacher and circumcised. Timothy was half-Jew, and Paul circumcised him so that he would not be an impediment while they tried to reach the unconfessed Jews. Although God did not demand that Timothy be circumcised, it was something he did spontaneously for the sake of reaching the Jews. However, as Paul specifically says in Galatians, circumcision helps neither salvation nor glorification in Christ.

Of course, the event with Timothy does not openly adapt to today, because Christians do not need to be circumcised in order to reach the distrustful, whether Jews or Gentiles. Once again, the principle of circumcision in the Bible where the importance of having a clean heart is raised is of utmost importance.

Is it a test of virility?

In many places around the world, baby boys are circumcised for medical reasons. In others, men live their entire lives without being circumcised. For some religions, such as Jews and Muslims, circumcision is not a simple healthy measure, but has a religious concept.

There are nations where circumcision is experienced as a ceremony when the child reaches development. To do this, it is common to send him to a school where the usual traditions of the place are taught. There he is circumcised and then remains removed from the community for several weeks while he recovers from the operation.

During that time he has to follow certain ceremonies and is taught to be a man. Now, is it necessary to contemplate this tradition to prove that a young man has reached virile age? How does God view circumcision?

Some ancient people, such as the Egyptians, practiced circumcision, which is based on cutting the foreskin of the male sexual organ. The patriarch Abraham was not born into such a culture. Furthermore, he lived most of his life uncircumcised, which did not prevent him from expressing his importance. With a small group of men he tracked down and defeated the armies of four kings who had taken his nephew Lot prisoner (Genesis 14:8-16). About fourteen years later, God commanded him to circumcise himself and all the members of his household. To what end?

Of course, it was not to signal that he had reached adulthood, for at that time Abraham was no less than 99 years old (Genesis 17:1, 26, 27). God made clear to him the reason for this precept: “You must be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and this must help as a sign of the agreement between me and you” (Genesis 17:11). «The Abrahamic commitment encompassed the divine divine that through Abraham wonderful mercies would come to “all the families of the earth.” (Genesis 12:2, 3).

So, in the eyes of God, circumcision had nothing to do with manhood; It was, rather, a sign that the individual corresponded to Abraham’s Israelite successors, who enjoyed the right to have “entrusted with the sacred formal declarations of God” (Romans 3:1, 2).

Over time, the Israelites presented themselves as shameful of that order by refuting the true succession of Abraham, Jesus Christ. God, in turn, refuted them, and his circumcised position vanished all meaning for him. Even so, some first-century Christians persisted that circumcision was still a divine requirement (Acts 11:2, 3; 15:5).

Hence the apostle Paul will send Titus to amend the deficient things in various brotherhoods. In the letter that he wrote to her, he pointed out one such defect that there are many undisciplined men, indiscreet without benefit and deceivers of the mind, mainly those individuals who associate themselves with circumcision. We must close their mouths, since these same men continue to disturb entire houses, teaching things that they should not because of dishonest gain (Titus 1:5, 10, 11).

Paul’s advice remains favorite. If a true Christian were to ask someone to circumcise his son, he would evidently be going against the Scriptures. Instead of getting involved in other people’s issues, he should let the parents determine these matters personally (1 Peter 4:15).

On the other hand, Paul wrote by suggestion the following about circumcision under the Mosaic Law: “Was any man called in a state of circumcision? He does not become uncircumcised. Has any uncircumcised man been called? He doesn’t get circumcised. Circumcision represents nothing, and uncircumcision represents nothing, but the discipline of God’s commandments does. In the state to which each one has been called, let him remain there” (1 Corinthians 7:18-20).

Should boys be sent to circumcision school?

Imagining that Christian parents decided to have their children circumcised, would it be in keeping with the Bible for them to send them to the schools mentioned at the beginning? These schools, known as “circumcision schools,” do much more than just surgically cutting the foreskin.

The young people who go there have to interact for several weeks with teachers and students who do not worship Jehovah; Likewise, many of the preparations transmitted in these centers refute the numerous ethical norms of the Bible. “Bad company spoils useful habits,” the Scriptures say (1 Corinthians 15:33).

Furthermore, the threat of enduring physical injuries in such institutions is increasing. In 2003, a medical journal reported the following prevention: “This year, circumcision operations have again been contemplated with horrible results, and major news services have reported deaths and cuttings around the world. In short, many of the so-called“Circumcision schools” today are not only a fraud: they are lethal” (South African Medical Journal).

In addition to the likely physical harm that the young man may endure, there is an even greater spiritual danger. The preparations and practices of these schools are closely tied to spiritualism and the rites of the parents. For example, instead of accepting that wounds are caused by surgeons’ carelessness and lack of cleanliness, many assign them to witchcraft or the discontent of deceased ancestors.

Regarding union with false religion, the Bible commands: “Do not become bound under capricious oppression with the distrustful. Because, what partnership do justice and abuse have? Or what participation does light have with darkness? ‘Therefore, depart from among them, and separate yourselves, says the Lord, and stop touching the unclean thing’; ‘and I will receive them’” (2 Corinthians 6:14-17). In view of this suggestion, it would be extremely foolish for a Christian to send his children to a circumcision school.

What makes a Christian a true man?

For the Christian, circumcision is not evidence of manhood. What truly matters is satisfying God, not “showing an attractive appearance in the flesh” (Galatians 6:12). To please God, however, the Christian must “circumcise his heart” (Deuteronomy 10:16; 30:6; Matthew 5:8).

This is not done by causing a cut on the body, but by removing bad desires and ideas that reveal pride, such as admitting that whoever imposes physical circumcision is superior to others. What makes a Christian a true man, whether circumcised or not, is that he resists the evidence and stands ‘firm in the faith’ (1 Corinthians 16:13; James 1:12).

What does the Bible say about circumcision?

Genesis 16-17: «When Abram was ninety-nine years old, Yahweh appeared to him and said: I am El-Saddai; Come into my presence and be perfect. Jesus (Peace be upon Him) was also circumcised. Muslims and Jews are circumcised. Why not Christians? To answer this question it is necessary to reflect on what is written about circumcision in the Bible.
