João Bidu is the most famous astrologer in the country, being president of the publishing house Alto Astral and responsible for editing the three best-selling astrology magazines in Brazil: Astral Guide, Good Luck! and Astral Day-to-Day.

He also talks about astrology on other platforms such as websites, social media, TV, podcasts and radio.

Life story of João Bidu

Born in Bauru, on November 8, 1947, João Carlos de Almeida was nicknamed Cala because his brother could not say his name.

At age 2 and a half, he had infantile paralysis. However, as at the time families hid their children’s disability because they thought it was a punishment from God, his mother allowed him to have an almost normal childhood.

Growing up in Vila Dutra/Curuçá, where Pelé played, the boy Cala lived with the King of football, which probably generated his passion for the sport.

As he couldn’t play ball because of his disability, João Bidu stayed in the corner with a can in his hand, playing to broadcast the game that the other boys were playing in the street.

The game turned into real work and soon he became a sports commentator on Rádio Auri-Verde. Afterwards, he went through the functions of radio listener, sports duty, reporter until he became a football announcer.

In parallel with his work at Rádio Auri-Verde, João Bidu was studying science at the university. But when he graduated, there wasn’t much demand for teachers in his region, so he gave up on pursuing a career, following as a radio broadcaster.

Entering the world of Astrology

On Auri-Verde radio, João Bidu was invited to present the horoscope of Omar Cardoso. That’s where the stage name Bidu came from. To present the horoscope, he would have to have a suitable name. According to the astrologer, “bidu” was 60s slang that meant “diviner”.

All ready for the beginning of the horoscope, Omar Cardoso, who had committed himself to writing exclusive material for Bauru, did not. So João Bidu had to improvise in the horoscope section by reading forecast yearbooks.

Used to working among men because of football, this contact with the female audience pleased João Bidu, who decided to study Astrology.

At the end of 1974, the astrologer then released a yearbook of predictions for the end of the year. One thousand copies of the so-called “João Bidu – Horoscope of 1975” were printed.

These yearbooks only circulated in Bauru, until in 1985, João Bidu launched the first magazine with national circulation: “Astral 86 – Sonhos e Simpatias”, with 30,000 copies.

In 1986, the astrologer launched his first periodical magazine, “O Seu Guia Astral”, with a circulation of 40 thousand copies – which later became the famous “Guia Astral”. From publication to the birth of Editora Alto Astral was a step.

In just five years, Guia Astral was already selling 250,000 copies a month. Then came Boa Sorte and Astral Dia-a-Dia, in addition to other special editions.
