Images of the universe – Nebulae

Firstly, nebulae are dense clouds of cosmic dust and gases such as hydrogen (practically 90% of the composition) and helium. They have a diffuse appearance and are found in space, close to the stars, but outside our Solar System.

Therefore, they also call them “stellar cradles”, since the gases are like a fuel for them to form.

Therefore, gravity gradually unites these residues and gradually forms a mass, increasing the gravity around it more and more.

Then, the force becomes so great that it exerts increasing pressure on its core – which generates the stars we know!

Carina Nebula

Taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, the image shows pillars of hydrogen mixed with cosmic dust in one of the largest star-forming nebulae, the Carina Nebula. An impressive image!

Horsehead Nebula

Apparently coming from a dream, the Horse Nebula was portrayed in this image of the universe by Hubble, penetrating the gas layer and capturing infrared radiation.

Orion Nebula

Another famous star formation area is the Orion Nebula. In the image, we see infrared comparisons made by NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope and the National Optical Astronomy Observatory. The region is located near the hunter’s sword and is so bright that it can be easily seen from Earth, even 1.5 light years from Earth.

Cat’s Eye Nebula

Certainly one of the most beautiful and incredible, the Cat’s Eye Nebula was one of the first planetary nebulae to be discovered by astronomers. Beforehand, it is believed that the star ejected its mass at intervals of 1,500 years, generating layers of cosmic dust that are as massive as all our Solar System planets combined.

There are about eleven layers of gaseous shells around the Cat’s Eye, which provides this stunning view.

Butterfly Nebula

Then, the Butterfly Nebula points out what appear to be two wings flying over the universe. However, they are nothing more than bubbles of hot gas that come out of massive stars located in the center of this region. The image was taken by a Spitzer Legacy Survey, which captured different infrared wavelengths.

Tarantula Nebula

This image is very different from those usually released by NASA depicting the Tarantula Nebula. Here, it is partially seen, captured by the Hubble telescope. However, a filter that allows infrared light to pass through was used, allowing its normally pink color to reach these shades of blue and green.

Helix Nebula

Seemingly staring down at us from above the universe, NASA Spitzer and GALEX’s image of the Helix Nebula shows the end of a dying star spewing dust and intense ultraviolet radiation into outer space.

Crab Nebula

Last in our nebula gallery, but by no means least, comes the Crab Nebula. Firstly, it is important to say that it is 6,500 light years from Earth, but in the year 1054, the Chinese saw it with such an intense glow that it could be admired in daylight for several months.

The explosion of the star that created the phenomenon had the intensity of 400 million suns, and if it were 50 light years away it would wipe out much of Earth’s life!

This image is the combination of five different telescopes: the VLA (radio) in red; the Spitzer Space Telescope (infrared) in yellow; Hubble Space Telescope (visible) in green; XMM-Newton (ultraviolet) in blue; and Chandra X-ray Observatory (X-ray) in purple.

Images of the universe – Supernovas

While millions of stars are born, every second a star also dies in the vast universe in which we live.

Thus, supernovae are nothing more than extremely massive stars, which at the end of their stage of evolution explode violently, generating an intense glow that can last for days or months.

Supernova generating a black hole

This is an animation that portrays N6946-BH1, a star that had 25 times the mass of our Sun. In some situations, the explosion of a star is gradual instead of a mega explosion, an implosion occurs, where it causes a black hole at the end of the process.

Images of the Universe – Joining efforts

This image of the universe is the combination of three observatories: Atacama Large Millimeter / submillimeter Array, in red; Hubble, in green; Chandra X-ray Observatory, in blue. It shows the remains of Supernova 1987A.

A new type of Supernova

Depicted in the image, supernova SN 2014J is in the M82 galaxy, 11.5 million light years from Earth and one of the closest found with this characteristic in recent decades. Its type of explosion characterizes it as a Type Ia supernova, composed of a binary system formed by a white dwarf with another of the same type or a giant star.

Images of the Universe – Explosion of colors

The remains of the Cassiopeia A supernova show radiation a billion times more energetic than visible light. To achieve this effect, they used combinations of several sources: gamma rays (magenta) from NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope; X-rays (blue, green) from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory; visible light (yellow) from the Hubble Space Telescope; infrared (red) from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope; and radio (orange) from the Very Large Array near Socorro, NM. Ufa! But what a beautiful effect, right?

Traveling remnant of a supernova

Despite coming to an end, the remains of a supernova can persist throughout the universe for a long time. This is the case with the remaining filament of SN 1006, which roams the universe composed mainly of hydrogen. In the background of the image captured by Hubble, it is possible to see several galaxies in the background, like small orange objects.

Colliding galaxies

Also, speaking of collision, how about this breathtaking image of the universe? It depicts two spiral galaxies, known as NGC 4676 or “The Rats”. Initially, it will take about 160 million years for them to meet and form a large elliptical galaxy.

Sombrero Galaxy

Certainly one of the most beautiful images of galaxies seen to date, the Sombrero galaxy is about 50 thousand light years long and is 28 million light years away from Earth.

Its shape is spiral and is located in the direction of the Virgo Constellation, also known as Messier 104.

Small Magellanic Cloud

The Small Magellanic Cloud is a dwarf galaxy, also neighboring Earth – 200,000 light years away from us. Therefore, its brightness is so intense that it is possible to see it with the naked eye if you are in the southern hemisphere or close to the Equator.
